He is playing with the leftover eggs from Curio's ill-fated pysanky-making attempt, changing the eggshells from shell to clear glass or paper-thin marble. (The ones that he has changed to flesh, he liked less; they had quivered fitfully and then fallen in on themselves.) Go ahead and bother him, if you wish.

Courfeyrac pauses on his way by to watch, frankly curious as a child. "Oh, that's clever--"

"It is, isn't it? I could turn them into anything, you know--a note of music, or a breath of summer--"

He laughs. "Butterflies, white rabbits--"

The gentleman smiles faintly, and the next egg becomes a flight of butterflies as green as the shell was.

'I say,' says Hadley-Bright. 'You're-- you look rather familiar.'

"Surely you must recognize a person whom you yourself had called to be present?" he asks, as though unable to comprehend that anyone might forget him.

'O! Of course! But,' he says, looking confused, 'why are you here? Levy did not summon you, did he?'

"I can come and go exactly as I please--I could go to Faerie or Hell or the world of men, and I can most certainly come here without any bothersome summons."

Stephen had been having a rather nice time by himself. He had his tea, and some books, and he even found a rather nice cat to complete the picture and help him pass the idle time. Until he got restless and took to wandering more recently. He likes to think it is because he misses walking through London on errands. That would be a bit of a falsehood.

It was on one of those walks that he catches sight of the gentleman. And immediately tries to backtrack as quickly and unobtrusively as possible.

The gentleman is of two minds--on the one hand, he would rather not have Stephen Black exist, and he knows several creative ways to ensure it. On the other hand, he knows from long experience that the living suffer more.

He does not in the least believe that Stephen Black never meant him harm.

Therefore, let Stephen Black think that he is a rabbit.

Poor Stephen really can't do anything then, but stand there and quiver, as rabbits tend to do.

The gentleman will very coolly rub Stephen behind his ears. He is a fairy; he feels like a predator.

Lady Pole has taken to wandering recently, herself. She's been enjoying the spring air, the flowers and all in the gardens, because it is nice to simply be able to enjoy things once again. However, today she is inside, intending to go to the kitchens for a cup of tea. She pauses in the doorway a moment, catches sight of who is there, and then promptly turns around to head back to her rooms.

He may have to intercept her, then--standing just at a corner that she must turn to reach her rooms, with a delighted smile. "Lady Pole--I am surprised to see you!"

She can't do anything but stop, then, and give him a demure (if cold) curtsey, and a polite smile, though it certainly does not reach her eyes. "Are you, sir? I have been here some time."

"Surprised to see you at the moment," he replies smoothly. "And it is such a large and convoluted place, is it not?"
