sent a couple letters in and made a few phone calls and now I'm currently quite a few thousand dollars richer in financial aid over at UNC.

On the financial website there's an address you can write to if you have any additional financial concerns that you didn't originally list when you applied for financial aid. This didn't work for us because I think they have a very small scope of things that are seen as need-worthy. I would call the financial aid office and talk to them about your options.
