I'm glad I withdrew from the Star Wars fandom (and from all fandoms, really) this year, since it allowed me to approach "The Last Jedi" with a mostly open mind and very few pet theories. And for the most part, I really liked it.
To my great surprise, I found myself really loving the interplay between Rey and Kylo Ren. He's still a whiny emo brat, but Adam Driver sells it and I think the film was clear about 1) his having been genuinely wronged by Luke and 2) his being responsible for his shitty choices. I'm vehemently against Reylo, but I enjoyed what went down.
Bits of it felt like filler - mostly the stuff concerning Finn, Rose (who is my EVERYTHING), and Poe. But there was some world building and character development, so I'm not as bothered as I could be.
I'm not bothered about the fact that Snoke died without our having found out who the hell he is. To be honest, I never really cared. I'm pleased that Rey appears to have come from nowhere; that was one of my few theories. It would have been better, perhaps, if Holdo had told Poe - and everyone else - her plan. On the other hand, he was being a dick. (I've seen Poe catching some hate over it. His little insurrection doesn't bother me, since we also saw him grow the fuck up.)
I loved how much Hux and Ren clearly despise each other.
I loved Yoda's cameo.
I loved Poe tickling BB-8 like a puppy. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
I goddamn love Rose and I goddamn love Kelly Marie Tran.
I'm glad there wasn't even a mention of midichlorions.
I'm glad they ditched the mask because, yeah, that was silly.
I'm fine with Luke's story arc. Contemplating killing his nephew was a bit of a stretch, but whatever, I can buy it.
I'm cool with angel!Leia, and I wish to hell they'd re-cast because I WANT TO KNOW WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED WITH HER CHARACTER. I will never stop missing Carrie but adkfjhadkjfhakjdhfkajdh.
Phasma was woefully underused. I mean, her fight with Finn was cool, but couldn't they have had her on one of the bridge scenes? What a waste of Gwendoline Christie. I hope she isn't dead.
I liked the porgs, but I'm glad they weren't more involved in the plot.
I really like that we FINALLY have a clear Bechdel Test pass, courtesy of Leia and Holdo. I love that Leia had a pal. I love that there were SO MANY WOMEN, not just in prominent roles but in the background too! And people of color! Hurrah!
Heh. I don't know who I ship anymore, other than NOT REYLO. I still love Rey/Finn and their hug was beautiful, but I don't want Rose to ever be sad. :( And Poe is so very beautiful.
It cracks me up that some dude at the Battle of Crait just licked the ground to see what it was. DUDE. ALIEN PLANET. DO NOT LICK.
I liked that it was thematically similar to "Empire" and "Jedi," but didn't feel like a remake in the way that TFA did.
That's all I've got for the moment.
