Recent Fun Happenings, or, "Some men just want to watch the Sea World burn."

Jul 24, 2008 23:47

Hello again, dear readers! Just call me lazy, because I really have no other excuse for waiting this long to tell you about what a fantastic day at Sea World I had when fatimablue and faetan came to town, and also a few bits of news from the past couple days.

Morning, Tuesday before last, and I got a call from Fatima that she and faetan were just passing through Lakeland, and were aiming to come pick me up. I told them to take US 27 north and call me as soon as they did so I could give them further direction. Their next call informed me that they were coming up on Sea World, and never saw an exit to US 27, which mystified me. Anyway, I got in the car and set out to meet them there. As an addendum, I saw no less than four signs declaring US 27 was near on my way back from Winter Garden on I-4 eastbound a few days ago. My only conclusion is that gremlins hid the signs as F&F were approaching.

There was almost another delay in meeting F&F. Once I got to Sea World's ticket booth, I just followed the arrows through those roped-off tourist rat-mazes theme parks always have, and waited behind the customer ahead of me to finish. As soon as she did and the teller was ready to see me, a Sea World team member made like she wanted to send me to the back of some orderly line of guests she had formed at the other end of the row of windows, despite the teller's repeated insistence that I had gotten in line fairly. I wish I had known ahead of time that Florida residents get a discount if we buy in advance online, much like I did for Universal for supiluliumas and I in May. In any case, for less than a 1-day single park ticket at WDW, I'm set to go to Sea World for the rest of the year should I choose to do so. Once I was in Shamu's domain, I gave F&F one more call to finally meet up, near the young dolphin nursery.

Up until this point, it had been a nice, sunny day. At the very moment I exchanged hugs with Fatima, whom I literally hadn't seen in years despite our close geographical proximity, and met faetan, it started to rain, which it did to greatly varying degrees for the rest of the day, making for the rainiest single day I can remember. Not the best weather for theme-parking, but we didn't let it put a damper on our spirits, just our bodies. I *did* bring my trusty umbrella for just such an event, and I tried to share it with my friends, but the rain was so great at times that it became a moot point for even one of us to use it.

Our first stop was iconic Shamu Stadium, home of the hardest-working titular killer whale in show business. Before the show, on a pair of huge Titan-Tron screens, one of which fizzled out very early on, they put up some trivia, picture puzzles, and then a salute to our armed forces. All members of the military and their families, as well as the families of those still deployed, were asked to stand so they could be televised to fanfare and thunderous applause, not to mention the thunder of the nasty storm cell nearby. Despite the weather, the show, entitled "Believe", went on. The show is bookended by video of a boy who is enamored with killer whales and carves a whale tail fin necklace out of wood. Out from behind the Tron runs a grown whale trainer wearing the same necklace. They put the picture of the two characters next to each other on the Tron, prompting me to chuckle, "Ohhh, NOW I get it!" Chuckles aside, Shamu and company didn't disappoint, delivering all the amazing feats one has come to expect. Adding some unintentional but welcome comic relief to the show was a scene-stealing, thieving great egret, who would sneak a fish or two out of the food bins when the trainers weren't looking.

After the show, we took a peek at the underwater viewing area for the killer whales, but they weren't around. We moved on to an arcade, where Fatima generously gave me a dollar for tokens. The game faetan wanted to play was DDR, so I swallowed my pride and stepped up while Fatima visited the bathroom, thinking she was going to take a turn too. After a too-intense first round, set at a difficulty better suited to those savant kids who spend all their free time stomping around these things, faetan clicked down the difficulty for me so I could wear myself out the rest of the way with a somewhat higher score. DDR isn't so much a game as it is a torture device for sane people. And after all that, Fatima didn't take part in the suffering!

We moved on past some carnival style games with a guy handing out "Free Game Bucks". We never did play, though they did have some huge Pokemon dolls one could probably win for three times their value. Since faetan was opposed to riding "Kraken", Sea World's thrill coaster, Fatima pointed out all the kiddie rides she could go on instead as we passed through "Shamu's Happy Harbor", which I believe used to bear the name of Captain Kidd instead. We then passed the Wild Arctic attraction, a simulator ride, but decided to get a little something to eat first. "Mango Joe's" was too crowded, and offered more than we wanted to eat or pay, so we made a quick jaunt back to Shamu Stadium for just the quick snacks we were looking for, and no line to boot! faetan fed some potato chips to a white ibis that happened by, and even took a chip from her fingertips before deciding he had had enough thrills for one day. Then it was back to Wild Arctic, the line for which had even gone down a bit. This wild helicopter ride to the Arctic features a flight through a trench in the ice, so you can imagine how the Star Wars references started flying! After the ride, there were a few Arctic animals on display, including a walrus who seemed to delight in dropping in to look at the fascinated guests, pausing only to surface for air.

We backtracked a bit, intending to visit the shark exhibit. We made a side trip to the Anheuser-Busch section of the park where they keep the Clydesdale horses. There's also a pen for the loveable, huggable Budweiser donkey, who made his dream of joining the Budweiser team come true a few Super Bowls ago! faetan got her picture taken with one of the Clydesdales and got prints, a couple of which were made into keychains. Luck was on our side again, since there was no line when we got there, only after. We continued to the shark exhibit, where there's a pool outside for the smaller sharks and rays. We bought some food guests can feed to the sharks, in the form of squid. The sharks, with most of their brains devoted to smell, even seemed to love the "squid juice" I dumped in the water from the empty tray. Before we went into the main shark exhibit, we stopped to look at some exotic birds in an enclosure, including a cute, fat one whose plumage made it look angry when it faced you. Then we enjoyed a slow ride on a conveyor belt through an underwater glass tunnel to gaze upon some of nature's most misunderstood creatures.

F&F intended to head for the dolphin cove where you can feed the animals after this, but as we passed the Sea Lion & Otter Stadium, I saw there was a show about to start, and suggested we take it in as long as we still had time. Plus it was starting to rain harder again. While everyone was finding their seats and Sea World's famous pre-show mime was plying his hilarious trade, Fatima and I took a few moments to link up on Nintendo DS. Years ago, Fatima helped me finish my Pokedex in Pokemon Blue by trading me her only Eevee. Now, even though she's more or less put the game down, I gave her a 500% return on her investment with five Eevees of her own. We also mixed records, and according to the TVs in my game, Fatima's Machop is her "ACE CARD", cooking Berry Poffins is "DAILY LIFE", and she wasn't so good at fishing. I also joined her group, "Kaizoku", because who doesn't want to be a pirate? This will only be a factor if we link up again, though. With that business out of the way, it was time for "Clyde & Seamore Take Pirate Island", the same pirate-themed show as the last time I visited Sea World years before. I'm glad we decided to stop by, because this was perhaps the funniest part of the day. Not because of the show itself, which is pure fluff and throwaway humor. But because of how uncooperative the sea lions were. At one point, Clyde decided he just wanted to slowly swim around instead of perform, and between laughing, the trainers explained that they had no choice but to wait until Clyde decided he wanted to play ball again, because you don't *tell* a 500-pound sea lion what to do. You only *ask*. They also explained that summer can be a tricky time for sea lion training, since this is sea lion breeding season, and Clyde has "other things on his mind". A couple minutes passed of Clyde lazily swimming around, and the trainers noted they may have to call in "Clyde #2". Clyde finally got out of the water portion of the stage and was led backstage where he could "tag out". Clyde #2 arrived on the scene as the show continued, but it wasn't long before *he* decided to run off, leaving behind another laughing trainer/performer. At the end of the show, even the more well-behaved Seamore decided to leave rather than tell the first mate what to do with the treasure. All in all, it was better than the show would've been had everything gone right, and it made me curious to see the separate "Sea Lion's Tonight" show later, but this was not to be. I guess I can always go back some night, though!

We went on toward the dolphins by way of the front of the park, making stops to see the sea turtles and pet the rays. We decided to wait in line to buy fish so we could feed and pet the dolphins, but then came the most miserable weather of the day, a steady downpour for at least a half hour. I don't know about F&F, but I suspect if we had it to do over again, we might've decided to skip this, cool as it is. Cranky Sea World team members more or less demanded that people gladly stand in the rain to keep the line moving, and even after we got our three fish apiece and were situated at the side of the exhibit, our only visitor was the world's most ungrateful dolphin, who was only all too happy to gobble up our fish while staying out of arm's reach, then swim away never to return once he knew we were out of fish. I'm sure dolphins are smart enough to know each person only has three fish, or if they can't count, at least that each person doesn't have *many*. Despite the queue line's insistence that our patience would be rewarded if we waited with our hands just above the water, there was no love for the fishless, and quickly getting drenched, we slinked away in defeat save for the experience of looking a dolphin in the maw, which is cool enough, I suppose. F&F made another bathroom stop while I waited in the rain, dodging tourists running to escape the downpour.

It was now almost time for the final and most spectacular part of the day. In advance, Fatima and I had made reservations for the Makahiki Luau at the Seafire Inn Restaurant. After a short wait in line, we were shown to our table, right at stageside, the last and greatest stroke of luck for the day. I could fill another whole post with how great the food and entertainment was. Our expectations were all exceeded. We were treated to entertainment from all across the South Seas, not just Hawaii. I recognized a Maori war dance in the program, as well as some rituals from Fiji and Tahitian fire dancing. The show was absolutely stolen by an adorable little hula girl who took the stage to thunderous applause and was actually dancing very well! How old do you suppose she was, Fatima? 5? She came out for an encore at the end, too. It was a perfect ending to a fun, fun day that even a Biblical flood couldn't stop!

We didn't get to visit the manatees, gators, and penguins, nor did we partake in the thrill rides like Kraken or Journey to Atlantis. The weather was bad enough that these rides might've been shut down for portions of the day, and I don't like riding coasters in the rain anyway. All too soon, it was time for me to part from F&F with fond farewells and hugs, and travel to the very end of the row where I parked. Let's not wait another five years, OK, Fatima?

Fast-forward to the other night, when I saw "Dark Knight". Talk about a tour de force by Heath Ledger. Brilliant as the Joker, I left really liking the movie, but wishing there had been more Joker and less Batman (I found his "Bat-voice" too hard to take seriously most of the time), and also that Mr. Ledger achieved greatness in this film, gone too soon. It's the swan song actors dream of.

Ever since the new casting took effect, Wednesday nights have been when I go to Napasorn. I haven't mentioned the restaurant much lately, but in all this time, I haven't seen Napasorn herself, for almost a full year. Until last night. Napasorn's sister notified me that Napasorn was coming to pick her up at closing time, and wanted me to stick around so she could see me, which I was all too happy to do. She had to park in a red zone on the corner, so I went out to finally meet her again and visit on the sidewalk. She brought along a friend, too, someone I had only heard about up until now, her pet bulldog Toadie. You'd be hard pressed to find a happier, friendlier dog. Napasorn played the proud mommy well, telling everything about him to the many admirers that came by: his name, his unique eye color (one blue, one brown), and his YouTube stardom! In between lavishing attention on a gleeful Toadie, Napasorn filled me in on the past few months: her yoga training in Acapulco for two months, her work at a yoga studio in Titusville, and her pet project, the opening of her own yoga studio near Sea World, set for a grand opening in late September. She's thinking of leaving the restaurant in the hands of her sister and friend to concentrate on this fully, though she'll still show up there often enough. She's already invited me and anyone else I work with to visit the studio once it opens, even talking of offering discounts for WDW employees. I shared with her what I had heard about people actually hurting themselves by trying too hard at yoga, and Napasorn knows all too well that there's too many yoga "teachers" crowding the scene. Did you know you can get "certified" to teach yoga in just two weeks? All the people who used to wait tables until they decided what to do with their lives are now becoming fly-by-night yoga instructors who may not have the skill to actually instruct. Not Napasorn. She's passed the aforementioned intensive with a respected branch of yoga straight out of India with flying colors, and yoga-style techniques and meditation are already well-ingrained in Thai culture as well. Anyone who studies with her and listens to their body will be in good hands. It was nice to meet again, and I'm sure we'll be seeing each other again soon enough. I'm excited to see what the studio will be like, and to tell my friends at work. Heaven knows a lot of them are stressed out and sore. I could fill another post with all those work woes, too, but I won't. I'll just say that I hope what we've worked to build over years of friendship and professionalism isn't torn asunder by drama-mongering.

Well, I guess that catches me up, so I'll call it before I remember something and type another hour. Today on YouTube's Greatest Hits...the one and only Toadie! For those of you who may not have read today's post, Toadie is Napasorn's bulldog.

He's pretty good, but I hope he doesn't get much heavier if he wants to pursue a swimming career!

Take the One Piece Character Quiz!

Again, who doesn't want to be a pirate, especially these days?

Sorry for the lapse again. Hope you all are doing well.

Until next time!
