The weird thing about Seuss' anti-Japanese cartoons was their contrast with his cartoons compassionately supporting the struggle of African-Americans for dignity and acceptance. Seems contradictory

this is such a complex and fascinating topic. I'm challenged by those old wartime works by artists I generally revere. I hope they were more a sign of the times as opposed to being an indicator of deep seated racism...
