I've had a couple new babies as homework lately. In the middle of it all is Socrates... the water (fowl) owl.

How much training does it take to rehabilitate birds?

well.. I understood in the beginning that it was different from mammals. But it's been a real experience. In August I will have completed my two year internship and be able to apply for my license. (Governmental hoops are ANNOYING)

Anyhow, with birds it's extremely complicated. Dealing with hollow wing bone structure for flight, and fussy dietary needs. It's all a case by case basis. I've noticed that taking work home is like having kids. You can't ignore them or lock them in a closet. The benefits though, are getting bonuses for keeping them alive if they are raptors, or "xp" for songbirds which gives you rep. (eek, sounds like I play too many role playing games on the side too)

But yeah, it's a lot harder than mammal rehab.

Wow that's a lot of training! I have 5 parakeets and 4 cockatiels that fly around the house (and poop on things). They provide hours of amusement with their various personalities. 1 of them sits around bitching until I let him perch on my head all night, then he tries to steal my damned food while I am eating it.

Oh god.. those guys are amusing! I could watch them for hours.

That, and an owl that finally sees his own reflection in a toaster! :D (The head goes completely upside down and circles around.)

I should be rehabing parrots again when they start breeding. The rogue parrots start after the song birds and they start after the raptors. So... I'm guessing 3 weeks at best.

Yeah.. there are wild cockatiels, monks, parakeets, etc. from people dumping them when they get tired of them. Makes for interesting wildlife rescue. We even found a Macaw causing traffic accidents by sitting on a power line in Arlington. o.O

I was wondering if you would ever post again! Guess you got your feet back on the ground and now you're up to your neck in birdie babies. I love the family photos..everyone is thriving and look mischevious. I've been checking the mail everyday....
