Last Wednesday, Carleigh was seen by a developmental Psychiatrist. Her grades this year are poor and I have been unable to understand why. I was disappointed in our meeting because I thought they would test her for learning problems, but she is not. But I did find out from the doctor that the school should test her for learning problems and with ( Read more... )

I hope you will be able to talk to someone who will be able to help her.
Good luck with the tests and talking to the counselor!!

I can totally relate to the frustration of never getting answers about what's making things difficult for your child. No one wants to deal with it unless the answer's obvious, yet they're quick to blame mom for not "addressing the problem". I hope things get sorted out quickly for you and Carleigh and help with it isn't hard to get.

The meeting didn't go like I had hoped. All I hear is as far as the school is concerned is "She will be fine, just work harder with her". They don't want to spend the extra money to have her tested. I was told that if I pay for the testing myself (it's $1,500.00 her insurance will not pay any of it), they would be interested in seeing what the test shows, but won't guarantee any special help. The school system is failing her.

omg.. it's that much? I guess I didn't realize how different it works in the US to Canada. I've spent alot of time into both my boys, psych tests, speech tests, hearing, genetic screeening, CT's and blood work, mostly for my youngest, who is special needs, and I get so frustrated that I never find anything out, and no one seems to be too concerned about getting to the bottom of it, but they all seem to expect me to be taking him to special workshops and whatever, when I'm working 3 jobs just to support my kids on my own. I never even considered how much harder it'd all be if healthcare didn't cover all that stuff. I'd probably be 10s of thousands of dollars in debt. Maybe do some research online, there's probably copies of the psycho-educational testing they do.. and really, it's pretty simple. If you figure out where her weaknesses lie, and you're pretty certain of what she needs, maybe the school system would respond different if you were able to tell them EXACTLY what you want them to do for her. I really hope things work ( ... )

That's a good idea. I will check on-line and see what I can find out. I did find another doctor that does testing. I faxed the paper work to their office today. They will try to get it approved through her insurance and then let me know. Her school said that they do not recognize testing through other offices. If I am able to have her tested then the next step is to go over their heads and call the school board.
Good luck with your children. It seems that no one cares about children with problems. If they are doing fine all is good and if they have any kind of problems, anything out of the ordinary, No one wants to help and it is left up to the parents to fend for themselves.
