So in the early days of the Empire, Latin was fairly widely spoken in the Eastern part as well as the west. After the Empire splits, Greek reasserts itself as the language of choice in the East. I've always wondered how much mixing there was of the two during the transition phase, and if so, then polyamory might well be right for the Byzantines. :)
