After she parts from Dr Crane, Lo does stop at the ice cream man's cart to get two lemon gelatos; one for her, and one for Bruce, who is her next stop after she wanders for a while. He didn't tell her to do anything, or that she should make sure Dr Crane doesn't notice she's going back to somebody; he gave her no instructions at all, in fact, but ( Read more... )

He didn't mean for her to go speak to Crane.

That's what he keeps saying and it's - well it's mostly true. The comment was out of his mouth before he could really thinking it and the implications through, like some kind of fucked up wordvomit that sounded calm and completely innocent and perfectly crafted to suit the unreal person he is during the day. Immediately he hopes and prays (to what, he doesn't know - Lo's own god, maybe) that she doesn't do anything, doesn't approach that madman, but he knows better, and so he watches, taking a page from another decayed soul he knows is connected back to his nighttime monster.

He has never felt more like a coward than he does as he watches this seventeen year old girl speak to the Scarecrow, at his behestWhen she leaves, so does he, hurrying away to grab a newspaper and sit somewhere innocuous, somewhere he'd be anyway (probably), because it would be stranger for him to have vanished - and far too cowardly. He tells himself that it would be too pathetic to run and hide in the wake of this ( ... )

"Dr Crane," Lo clarifies, in a tone that suggests she did not anticipate needing to clarify and thinks he's better at being dumb when he's not playing (it's an eloquent twist of two words), tucking one foot underneath herself and licking around the edges of her gelato where it's going to start melting. "He's creepy! I don't know if he's just like that or what, but geez, it was a little weird."

Not once does she imply that she did this because he said so; it sounds less like she's reporting back than like it really could be just a casual remark on a peculiar exchange she just had. Except- except she's a little expectant. It's not praise that she's looking for - she's just waiting, watching him, wondering.

The pause here and the torn, mostly-hidden concerned look on his face are not things he has to force; they are real, not acted, and the only conscious effort on his part is allowing the emotion to filter through his otherwise stoic core.

"...That doesn't surprise me, considering he's supposed to be in prison." He says it reluctantly, like he isn't sure what else to say, or as if his real reaction isn't appropriate.

"No wonder it's weird seeing him here!" ...but Lo doesn't even manage to muster genuine surprise. She grew up in Gotham, and all she wonders if it was one type of fuck up or the other. "What did they nail him for - do you know?"

Do you know? How much do you know, Mr Wayne? What were you thinking when you made that comment and what does the pit of your stomach feel like right now?

"Maybe he's on drugs," she speculates, sticking her little finger in the gelato and dragging her nail through it like a spoon. "Like, I don't know, valium or something."

(Spoiler: probably not valium.)
