NFC East: used to be Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington, NY Giants, and St. Louis/Arizona. The four other teams all have strong rivalries, while none of them care about the Cardinals, so they were kept together.

St. Louis (otherwise known as "Los Angeles") was put in the west to keep their rivalry with the 49ers, as well as letting "St. Louis" play "the Cardinals" twice a year and play up that "rivalry".

Miami stayed in the NFC East with Buffalo, NY Jets, and New England, because they're all old rivals. Indianapolis was kicked out. Meanwhile, Baltimore -- the former Cleveland Browns -- were put in the same division with the new Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh, again for rivalry reasons. Cincinnati, obviously, is also big rivals with Cleveland and Pittsburgh, leaving Indianapolis out in the cold.
