It's Hard To Believe, Isn't It?, Jack/Liz, marrying someone else, PGmichellekOctober 31 2008, 05:40:10 UTC
She says: "I can't believe I'm getting married."
He says: "Neither can I."
"Well. Thanks."
"Lemon--"
"It's fine. You didn't think anyone would want to marry me, and that's fine."
There's another explanation, of course. (She's always had a way of jumping to the wrong conclusion.) Something about how he didn't expect his chance with her to slip through his fingers. Something about how he's spent a good chunk of their friendship expecting her to be his second wife (the first who'd spend most of their time together liking him). He could tell her, has almost done so several times since she announced her engagement. He could tell her, but there's no benefit in it. (He's sure her ignorance of his feelings for her is willful.)
"Well," he says finally. "I will admit I was wrong."
"That's kind of your only choice, though."
He's silent for a moment. "You're right."
(He tries to think of an excuse he could use to get out of attending the wedding.)

Liz squirms in her seat a little as they introduce the presenters for the next award. (Her award.) She doesn't even know who they are. Probably former 'MILF Island' contestants, she laughs nervously to herself

Awwww! So lovely, so simple, and so indicative of their bond.
My absolute favorite part of this, though, were everyone else's reactions -- Tracy being all loud and... well, Tracy. Jenna and the mention of Yolanda -HAHA! Frank and his hat, etc. Very in-character.

Thank you so much!! :D
Oh God, I'm so glad you said "in-character" cos that's what I was worried about!! lolz
I think I will. I wasn't planning on writing any and then I saw the prompt and the story just shot straight into my head and practically wrote itself in about ten minutes! lol.

Red and blue illuminate the dark room. In Jack's office, they're watching the votes come in like they're watching a football game (or some other sporting event she'd even take a remote interest in... of which there are none). With every vote for Obama, Lemon does one of three things

Liz can’t believe it. She’s dressed up as Princess Leia for the seventh year in a row. Jack knows she dresses up like her, he was with her when she bought new side buns after Tracy stole the old ones, thinking they were leftovers from the Tracy Jordan Meat Machine and wanting to destroy all evidence of that. But that’s not the point. The point is that Jack knows she loves Star Wars and he’s mocked that love every time she’s mentioned it to him. And now, there he is, dressed as Han Solo

“It’s all your fault Jack!”
She imagines he’s regretting placing this phone call right about now (because she would be). “I’m sorry Lemon.”
She expected many things when she finally talked to Jack after that disastrous night, but an apology was not one.
“You’re sorry?”
“Yes, of course. I knew my mother had plans to ruin your family dinner and I did very little to stop her.”
“You knew she was going to make my family crazy ( ... )

I loved this especially:
3. He's forgotten the third reason. He can feel the side of her breast against his arm.

She’s also not entirely convinced that he didn’t just mean to dress up as Indiana Jones and got confused about Harrison Ford’s many different roles.
This line is so excellently Liz and how Liz thinks Jack thinks. :)
