Last night, at about 8:30, I heard an insistent series of knocks from the apartment landing. I was not really in the mood to receive sudden visitors, so I chose a cunning method for dealing with it: I hoped it was somebody knocking on somebody else's door. Twenty or thirty seconds later the knocking came again, so I opened the door, peeked around
