So, correct me if I'm misunderstanding, but these alterations - they weren't voluntary? You all just woke up with them? Because I've seen fads catch like wildfires before, but this seems a bit much.

[There's a pause that seems as if he's somewhere watching someone pass him by.] You need some color variation in the glint and glimmer, perhaps some ( Read more... )

I'm pretty sure it's a curse, Cinna.

If you need any help setting up a place, I'd be really happy to help.

I don't know if I should call that a relief or not. Although as fads, or curses, go it is rather benign.

...And I'm certain I could come up with some furniture for you to help move... or burn. Furnished apartments really are only convenient if the previous owners had taste.

Was that really a fad in the Capitol, ever? I mean after seeing some things...

And you know we're not exactly known for our taste. We're from District 12. If it's not ripped, it's pretty much going in the house. And that's me, I don't think Katniss is as picky.

Oh, Peeta... everything's a fad in the Capitol at some time or another. And most of it is... rubbish to be honest. That's why I like doing things that are comparatively simple with the two of you.

...Your choices are utilitarian. That doesn't mean you can't make the most of what you have.

Curses don't usually tend to go the voluntary route. I think it's less fun if we can get all 'thanks but no thanks' on whatever stupid thing the deities have planned for the day.

[ and now the real reason dawn was pinged. ]

You're a fashion designer?

So I've been told.

Yes, I am actually. Although my more recent work was for a specific purpose, here... well, things are different here, aren't they?

This is pretty harmless, though, as curses go. I guess if you hate glitter and you're sparkling it's on the annoying side, but there's a singular lack of horrific trauma.

...Sure, I guess. There are some nicer shops you can look at? I mean, my involvement with clothes involves buying and wearing them so the technical side of how you would go about getting all patron'd up is lost on me, but there are some really nice places just off the Square.

I noticed a few, perhaps I'll ask around further. As a fan of the trade, do you know what kinds of things have been popular here in the past?

It doesn't get everywhere.

The less people there are around, the less--

It gets many places it shouldn't and that's too many places for me. You, evidently have other tastes.

[ If they were face to face, she knows a great deal of what she could say would be, or could be expressed in a look or even a tone with less telling words, but as this is over the network she has to pause, has to consider what to tell him because even though she has come to accept the Capitol does not reach here, the paranoia is old; too deeply rooted to brush off. Aside from that, she feels it's almost unnecessary, maybe pointless even to try to explain herself to Cinna who knows her in ways that can, perhaps account for those explanations already. Katniss chose the forest over the City, fearful at the time of a new set of Games she couldn't begin to understand, and then Katniss chose a four-walled mimicry of a house on the shore, still hesitant to be where the masses thrive most--where to her the most danger is when a curse breaks out that is violent and terrible rather than just garish and an ill-humor of a reminder that some people here are not alive, though they look like they are ( ... )

I seriously don't think you'll have any trouble starting up your own store, if you can't find one to work in. There are plenty of girls here who like pretty outfits.

If you manage to get them to move into one of the apartments, you'll have to tell me how you did it. I've been trying to get them to come into the buildings pretty much since they've been here with... well, no luck, obviously.

I think everyone likes looking good, despite what they say.

And I think I have the advantage of prior knowledge.

True, but some people's definition of 'good' kind of differs.

So you bribed them?

Oh, you're a fashion designer? How lovely! I once met one a long time ago, when she remade a dress for me that I'd ruined by mistake, but I haven't seen many others around since then. So I think there'll be plenty of demand for you, if you do manage to go into business for yourself!
