A translation of the Death of Connla

Note that this version says that he’s seven years old, while I’m playing him as closer to his later teens. Some translations say that he leaves when he’s seven, others when he ‘comes of age’, and, quite frankly, I don’t know any seven year old kid that has hands big enough to fit his dad’s rings, so I’m going with the older Connla.

Affiliation: Trainer. He wants to be the very best!

Personality:

Connla is a headstrong, quick-tempered, determined boy who grew up knowing that he was the son of the greatest hero in all of Ireland. He isn’t the type to let anything get in his way-a trait that he likely got in a double-dose from both parents-and has the confidence to back up everything he does. He was the kind of boy who made a mockery of the best men of Ulster and, to add insult to injury, told them that even if they were a hundred strong, they wouldn’t be able to stop him. This kind of rashness borders on foolhardiness; his mouth sometimes gets the better of him and he’ll say something that he’ll regret later. He isn’t afraid of anything that he’s ever come across-after going through training under Scathach, the legendary warrior-woman who trained his father, he’s pretty damn sure that he’s prepared for anything. And to go along with that fearlessness is a fierce competitive streak-he’ll accept any challenge that comes his way, partly because of his three geasa and partly because he’s just that kind of guy.

And like a true Irishman, he loves his liquor. If he hadn’t been stuck training with his aunt for such a long time, he’d have had his father’s love of women as well-thankfully, he hasn’t fallen into the problem that Cu Chulainn had yet of making enemies by ruining every woman in Ulster. Like his father, though, he’s handsome and knows it, which doesn’t do much to rein in his growing ego.

Though he has several bad points, Connla has his good ones as well-he’s loyal almost to a fault and wouldn’t hesitate to protect those dear to him. And he figures that the best way to protect the people he cares about and make them proud is to find his father and become a hero just like him. After all, if he’s a hero, he’ll have the strength and skill to protect his home-and win fame and fortune along the way. He has a pretty good nature; unless someone does something that will really get on his nerves, he’s likely to be pretty friendly to anyone. And if there’s liquor around, he’ll drink until dawn with his enemy if they happen to get along.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Connla is just as strong, swift, and skilled in combat as Cu Chulainn, with the potential to be even more so. He was trained by the same woman as his father, and the training he went through wasn’t a walk in the park-Scathach was a slave-driver and a hell of a hard woman to please, so he is as strong and fit as it’s possible for a young man to be. Scathach didn’t raise a fool, either-he has some of the naivete of youth, but he isn’t an idiot and wouldn’t appreciate being treated like one.

He knows absolutely nothing about any kind of technology past the Iron Age, so he’ll be utterly lost in the Pokemon universe. His recklessness and quick temper isn’t going to make the transition any easier, especially if when he gets frustrated from the culture shock. He’s also used to solving problems through fighting, so finding out that this is not socially acceptable will be a bit difficult for him, as will all the other social mores that he’s not at all accustomed to.

And he’s going to miss his liquor.

Connla also has three geasa that were placed on him by his father-the first was that he could never turn back once he started his journey, the second was that he could never tell anyone his name, and the third was that he could never refuse a fight. He will still follow these three conditions even while he’s in Route, and, while breaking them won’t have quite the same affects they would if he was back home, it would be a big psychological blow to him.

His luck also sucks.

Samples
(Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)

First Person Sample:

Well, that went all arsewise.

[There’s a kid on the Pokegear screen. A really Irish kid. He doesn’t appear to notice that he’s being broadcast.]

Where the fuck am I? [he turns in a circle] And where the fuck is all that music coming from?

[He notices the Pokegear.] … [It gets a close up of his face.] What a weird thing. [Poke. The camera shakes.] Wonder what it does.

[He picks it up and the video feed shakes all over.] Come on, open up you damn thing. [There are a few scraping noises and a pop.] Got you--

[The feed shuts off as Connla pulls the battery out.]

Third Person Sample:

Connla sat in the dust by the side of the route, pack on his lap and Pokegear in hand. He hadn’t really gotten the hang of it yet-hell, he didn’t really understand anything that went on in this world-but he knew that it was something that let people talk to each other. The best he could come up with was a kind of magic mirror, like the sort of thing the fairies had. Getting it to work was always a trial and it was more miss than hit, but he managed to pick up a transmission from someone he never thought he’d see again.

He would have known his father’s face anywhere.

“…”

He’d never thought that he would see Cu Chulainn’s face again. After all, he was dead-his father had stabbed him through the heart with the cursed lance Gae Bolg. He remembered the hole in his chest and dying in his father’s arms, surrounded by the men of Ulster. On his finger was still his father’s golden ring, the one he had finally grown into, signaling that he was finally old enough to leave Scathach’s tutelage and his mother Aoife and go to Ireland in search of his heroic father.

Even though their last meeting had ended up with a big hole in his chest, Connla wanted to find Cu Chulainn again.

He only realized after the feed had shut off that if he wanted to speak to the other man, he ought to have done so before he stopped talking.

“Dammit!” He started pressing buttons at random. “Damn you, you magic mirror, bring him back! I swear I’ll break you to pieces if you don’t--!”

Connla didn’t have much luck, though-a trait that he likely inherited from his father-and the screen went black.
