The last of our rats, Dot, died last night. She was such a lovely creature, but had got so ill and old lately that it was really upsetting me. I just can't believe they're all gone now. The world seems like a grey place today.
The four of them were sisters, and very alike. They were rescue rats from Bristol and had mycoplasma infections which gave 'em respiratory problems from the start, poor wee critters.
pnostlove's mum had 19 of the buggers for a fair while, but none so sweet as Dot.
I had a couple of rats when I was young..Salt and Peppa. One was pure white the other was a splotchy brown-black. Those things are smart little beasts! My condolences.
Thanks for all your comments! I was actually convinced we were going to have to take Dot to the vets to have her put down, but she beat us to it. I'll never forget any of them, even evil bitey Stevie, cos they're the first pets I had as an adult, and strangely enough, I've cried over these creatures more than I ever did over childhood pets.
Still, me and Pnos have decided that we will return to the rat rescue place we got these ones from and give some more a home, perhaps next week. It's awfully quiet without all the scrabbling in the corner!

Looking at that photo they all seem to have similar markings..were they all relatives?
