Hmmm... input anyone?

Ok, so I'm debating majoring in Civil Engineering. Does anyone have any experience with this? Since I went to KY straight out of highschool, I have never taken any college classes. I'm starting this spring, and I'm going to a comm. college. Then I'm transfering to a 4 year ( Read more... )

any kind of math, engineering or science/health degree is a great idea. forget all the liberal arts degrees-they're basically useless if you only want to get a BA. doing 4 semesters in 3 can be done if you manage your time well. get your school catalog, figure out what you need, and go to the online schedule and see how far in advance they schedule things, so you can figure out what you need to take when (not every class is offered every sem, some have prereqs, etc). any other ?s just let me know!

Awesome! Thanks for the input. I hope I didn't screw myself with starting in the spring instead of fall (I know I did to some extent, but I just wasn't back in CA early enough for fall classes). I'm hoping that they are offering the lower half classes (like the calc you take 1st semester) second semester. We shall see...

some as above. granted i know NOTHING about civil engineering. im one of those hippie environmental people...anyways

i think going to the comm college is a great idea for gen eds! i wish i had done that!it makes it so much more interesting when you can take all your major classes when you want to. also see if there's any summer courses offered that you can take over the summer instead of during the year that way you can maybe pick up one between semesters. i'm not sure how all community colleges work. good luck!

Lol it's funny you say that.
I sort of consider myself an environmental person (I probably don't do enough, by I try to be an advocate) and that's why I'm interested in civ. eng. I want to work on new "green" or whatever you want to call it, technology.
I hate development, but if it has to happen, it would be nice to have a hand in making happen the right way.

i'm getting my degree in environmental studies which is basically just about policy making, the economic issues, super basic science ideas...stuff like that. i'm not good enough at science or math to be a real environmental science major sadly.

i think anything having to do with designing new 'green' technologies or ways of building are super exciting and interesting. i'd like to be the person who helps think up the ideas then sends those ideas over to you to execute! although if i my school offered environmental engineering i very well might try it...although i'd probably fail! haha

Yep, I'm back in Davis. I'm going to Sac City College for my gen ed and then to Possibly UCD or somewhere else... Your posts make me want to go to SLO and ride at your barn! :)

you totally should... we'd love to have you and your boy... Plus we have the #1 YR in the country (Max McMamany or however you spell it) riding at our barn :)

I'm majoring in Environmental Engineering (previously I was going to major in Civil and Environmental Engineering) and I am just finishing my gen ed before diving into the actual classes needed for my degree! If you want to help out the environment, I would choose Environmental Engineering or Civil and Environmental Engineering because Civil primarily focuses on building and designing structures. Usually consulting firms and contractors hire Civil Engineers to build the structures and then hire Environmental Engineers to do the start and complete the lovely environmental saga ( ... )

Ok, so I wrote this really really fast and I am terribly sorry if there are any mistakes!

Also, I'm probably transferring to Cal Poly SLO because I hear their Engineering programs are really good if that matters to you!

Good info! Thank you sooooooo much! This is basically exactly what I want to do. Do you find the work interesting? Do you have any time to work or ride?
I'm really starting to think seriously about this major... but I hope I'm not in over my head. I'm a good student, and I'm not afraid of a challenge, but is it an insanely difficult major?

I haven't actually started the actual classes for the major because I'm still finishing up my gen ed. *sigh* And then I have to go through two years of physics and math before diving into the engineering classes. The Enivronmental classes sounds a hundred times more interesting than the Civil classes because there are a LOT of structure classes for Civil while in Environmental there are not ( ... )

Heyyy this is late but I noticed you were thinking of doing Civil Eng... I am a physics major currently and my friend is a Civ Eng major, and I def think it's a good way to go. I'm not sure how comparable physics and engineering are, but physics is a pretty hard courseload with a lot of math and such and I'm still finding time to ride about 5 times a week :] So it can be done.

Good luck!
