With Hyrule free again, Princess Zelda sends Link back to his childhood, so that he can properly live the lost seven years of his childhood. When he awoke, he was back in the Lost Woods, before Ganon had began to pursue the Triforce. At first, he was happy, but he quickly realized that he could no longer relate to the simple, innocent Kokiri, and that he was longing for the outside world that he had protected and come to love. Morover, it dawned on him that Ganondorf was still alive and well at this time - and may still be plotting to kill the Royal Family and take the Triforce. Knowing his job as the Hero of Time was still not over, he left the forest to go to the castle and warn the King and Princess Zelda, even if she had no memories of ever meeting him. Link was a vastly different person than he was at the beginning of his adventure - although he had returned to his child's body, he was no longer a true child in mind or spirit.
After sneaking into the castle again (much like the first time), he found the King and Zelda. As guards swarmed in panic to carry him off, he managed to get the Princess' attention by quickly reciting her prophetic dream about Ganondorf. Having intrigued her and the King, he explained that he was the Hero of Time, returned from the future, and recounted to them his entire struggle against Ganondorf, from the cursing of the Deku Tree to being sent back to his childhood by Zelda. To finally convince the skeptical King, Link showed him the Triforce of Courage, still embedded in his hand, and all doubts were erased. Indeed, the Triforce of Wisdom had somehow entered Princess Zelda's hand as well. Link reasoned that Ganondorf must also already have the Triforce of Power, and that if he realized it, terrible things would soon happen.
Ganondorf was summoned to the castle, and after an investigation, it was found that he actually did have the Triforce of Power. Moreover, Link's accusations were true - the Gerudo King really was planning to storm the castle and steal the Triforce. The King sentenced him to be executed at the Arbiter's Grounds in the desert wastelands - the Gerudos' own land. (He would later come back a few generations later to cause trouble in Twilight Princess :>)
But Link did not like this at all. Despite being the accuser, he begged the King to spare Ganondorf's life and settle for a more lenient punishment. After all, Link knew what Ganondorf was planning to do - but he hadn't actually done it yet. After hearing the news that Ganondorf had "successfully" been killed at the Arbiter's Grounds, he felt a very heavy, very strange sense of guilt. Link was the one who barged into the castle to so passionately warn the Royal Family, so why was he now so upset that the dangerous man was gone? His people were thankful and tales of the Hero of Time began to spread across Hyrule, but Link was growing more and more distraught.
Feeling as if he were distantly removed from those around him, he remembered his fairy Navi, who was nowhere to be found since he was sent back to his childhood. She was sent back with him, so was it possible she remembered the alternate events of the future the same way he did? Link began to long for her companionship, and he soon decided to leave Hyrule and search the vast uncharted Lost Woods for her.
Before leaving on Epona, Zelda entrusted the Ocarina of Time to him and told him never to forget the Song of Time, which he could play to call on the Goddess of Time. Although he was sad to part with Zelda, Link's departure from Hyrule was a very personal embarkation. Not only was he searching for Navi, but he was searching for a place he felt he belonged in, for some purpose in life now that his job as the Hero was complete, for his future basically.
It's during his wanderings through the Lost Woods that Skull Kid steals Epona and the ocarina, and he eventually finds himself in the bizarre, doomed world known as Termina.
Majora's Mask info:
http://www.zeldawiki.org/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Majora%27s_Mask Link is post-canon, so he is arriving on the Elegante as he ventures back off into the Lost Woods to continue his search for Navi.
Spoken / written languages: he speaks Common/English (Hylian to him), and read/writes in Old Hylian.
Abilities: Link is strong, fast, and very quick-thinking even by an adult's standards. What he loses in power for being so small (he is not even 4 feet tall), he gains in agility. He's a fast-learner, is familiar with a large variety of weapons and items, and is a natural genius with swordplay.
In his left hand is the Triforce of Courage, a shard of the Triforce that was embedded in his body when Ganondorf touched it and caused it to split into 3 parts. It's invisible when dormant, but when it activates, a glowing Triforce mark appears on the back of his hand. Zelda's and Ganon's respective Triforce pieces give them clear magical abilities, but what Link gains from his is not as clear. It's possible that the Triforce of Courage is what gives him inhuman bravery, luck and survivability.
Link also has his four transformation masks from Majora's Mask which each grant him different abilites. (See below.)
Items: Masks aside, Link will have on him the Gilded Sword, Mirror Shield, Hero's Bow, Ocarina of Time, Lens of Truth and Hookshot. Obviously most of those will be taken away from him. Of course, he also has the Triforce of Courage.
Now for the masks: Link used three of these masks, the Deku Mask, the Goron Mask and the Zora mask, to inhabit different bodies; they turn him into a Deku Scrub, Goron and Zora respectively. Each mask was crafted from the soul of a dead member of each of these races, and Link gains the abilities of those races when he's wearing them. (As a Deku he can skip across water and shoot bubbles, as a Goron he is resistant to fire and can roll around, as a Zora he can breathe water, etc etc)
The fourth mask, the Fierce Deity Mask ("Demon God Mask" in Japanese) is given to him by Majora himself after Link sacrifices all 20 of his non-transformation masks to him. When Link wears this mask, he turns into a 8-foot tall, immensely powerful, white-haired and white-eyed being resembling a Hylian. Although he wears a white tunic and hat similar to Link's, he's also wearing heavy armor and face paint and wields a two-handed helix sword that can fire these weird bolts of lighting/energy (this sword can be taken away when Link boards the ship, of course). Who exactly the Fierce Diety is remains a mystery, but he seems to be an ancient god or demigod, possibly evil thanks to the "demon" half of the mask's Japanese name. Since Link's other transformation masks were made from the souls of dead people, it's implied that the Fierce Deity Mask was also crafted from a soul. The only real explanation is that the Fierce Deity battled Majora and lost, although this seems unlikely, because having the Fierce Deity Mask turns a complicated 20 minute final boss into something you can do in 2 minutes by mashing the sword button. >_> Yes, FD Link is kind of amazing.

The sound of Epona's slow, heavy footsteps echoed through the trees, a gentle rhythm that was already making Link feel sleepy. It had only been a few hours since he ventured through the basement of the clock tower to somehow find himself back in the Lost Woods, back among the fog of the forest. Tatl was gone, reunited with Skull Kid and her brother. The mask salesman had disappeared. And the residents of Clock Town were busy with their festival. All that was left for him was to continue searching for Navi, but his spirit felt so exhausted, he was even contemplating returning to Hyrule.
How long had he been there? He squinted at the thick fog hanging above the forest floor at the thought. Obviously it wasn't a matter of real time, as technically only three days had passed since he and Epona were wandering this same forest. No, it was a question of how long it had been for Link himself, how many times he had relived those same three days. Link frowned at those exhausting months and months of near-futile fight against the falling moon - it couldn't have been years, could it? - and his hand wandered into his pocket to touch the cool smooth surface of his ocarina. If it had been anyone but the Hero of Time that wandered into Termina, it wouldn't have stood a chance - and even then, without the Ocarina of Time's power for, there wouldn't have been anything he could do either. It'd saved them all yet again.
The fog around him seemed to thicken, and Link realized that it was thanks to a large pond among a clearing of trees ahead. Dismounting from Epona, he put a hand on her side to guide her to the water, and watched her drink quietly. The reality of his solitude returning was setting in.
He could... put on a mask. When he's wearing a mask, it doesn't feel like he's alone... . The mask's spirit entered and changed his body, so in a weird way, no, he wasn't alone. There's would be someone with him undoubtedly, even if it's more like the creepy feeling of being watched by a ghost than companionship. But which mask? Although each spirit had received the satisfaction of seeing their unfinished business completed, the echoes of their past anguish were present in the masks themselves. The Deku was afraid, the Goron regretful, the Zora filled with a sense of failure... As lonely as Link was, he doubted that their emotions would improve his own mood right now.
And his fourth mask, he had no interest in putting back on.
When Epona lifted her head from the river, Link was already quickly pulling himself back onto her back. Alone again, he was alone again. He had to go back to Termina, back to the people he'd come to know and want to save, even if they didn't remember a thing about him. Turning Epona around and digging his heels into her sides gently, she began to gallop back in the direction they'd came from.
Maybe I can make it back... maybe the entrance is still there...
But Link, a child of the Lost Woods himself, knew how unlikely this was. The tree trunks, indistinguishable from one another, went on endlessly.
First Person Sample:
The ocean...? Am I back at the Great Bay? No...
...um, hello? Can somebody hear me through this thing? I don't know what happened, but I hope you don't intend to keep my stuff, whoever you are. It means I'm going to have to go find it myself. Again.
Whatever's going on... I'd just like an explanation. As long as there isn't trouble, it's okay, maybe...
Preferred Quarters: Nearby the forest!
CANON INFO, mostly according to the Happy Mask Salesman:
- Majora's Mask is ancient, hundreds or even thousands of years old. It was worshiped by an "ancient tribe" and used in rituals to perform curses and hexes. Its power became too great, and it began to cause serious trouble. As a result it was sealed away in shadow.
- Whoever wears the mask gains "an evil and wicked power". With the mask on the loose, the Happy Mask Salesman knows that a great catastrophe will undeniably befall Termina.
THINGS NOT EXPLICITLY STATED BUT CAN BE INFERRED:
- Majora is a soul trapped inside a mask, much like Link's other transformation masks.
- It behaves in a twisted, yet child-like manner, and is undeniably insane. If Link plays with him enough, he GIVES him the Fierce Deity Mask so they can play a game of Good vs. Bad - Link being the bad guy, of course. This means Majora was actually carrying around the Fierce Deity's Mask.
- Majora's pranks are the source of the four monsters residing in Termina's temples. This isn't stated specifically but it's obvious. He did this to trap the Four Giants and prevent them from stopping the moon.
FANON:
Millennia ago, the ancient tribe that created Majora's Mask created many, many masks from the souls of deceased people. Most of them were dead Terminians, who they cruelly dominated over.
Majora's Mask was created from the soul of a Terminian child. However, it is hard to say how intact the remains of this child's soul truly are in the mask. After so many countless horrific rituals, maybe the child's soul has left only imprints on the mask's own consciousness.
It was the mask of the tribe's leader, known as Majora. Not only was Majora especially good at casting curses, but his mask was famous as an excellently crafted and wonderful amplifier of the tribe's magic. However, Majora began to act extremely strange as time went on. It started as simple pranks - the pranks of an innocent child vying for the attention of its schoolmates and adults. But the mask's power had grown with every spell it was used in, and as it took the lives of more and more Terminians in the tribe's rituals, the chieftain in turn became more and more ruthless.
The Four Giants, seeing this happen to their land, decided to take care of the tribe once and for all. A Terminian youth was summoned by the Giants and imbued with their power, becoming the mortal hand of the gods, a Hero of legend.
Majora and the Hero fought fiercely, but in the end, the Hero was defeated. Majora's power had come to surpass those of the Four Giants themselves.
The ancient Terminians watched in horror as Majora captured their Hero's soul before it left the world of the living, and transformed it into the Fierce Deity's Mask, trapping his soul inside helplessly and denying him any peace in death. This is why Majora even has the Fierce Deity's Mask when he gives it to Link many, many years later.
All was not lost, however. Although the Terminians lost their Hero, he was in fact victorious in the end, as Majora had nearly been killed himself and was weakened considerably. The Four Giants took this opportunity to rid Termina of him for good, but as they struck, Majora used his own magic to end his life and seal his soul away in his own mask - the last laugh would be his.
Not only was his power restored, but it increased a hundredfold, his soul becoming one with the essence and experience of the mask. Because of this, Majora's Mask essentially contains two different souls. The child's soul is the source of its trickster tendencies and oftentimes senseless, oblivious conversation; Majora's soul is the root of its insanity, its unsatiable lust for causing pain and sadness, and strange moments of sinister wisdom.
With Majora's power drained from inserting himself in his own mask, the Giants quickly threw it into the realm of shadows, using all of their power to seal it there. With that finally complete, they lashed out at Majora's tribe in their rage, smiting them all dead to prevent their evil magic from ever creating another such monster.
Terminians, despite their relief to see the tyrant gone, grieved for their fallen Hero.
In modern times, the Hero is remembered as a God that saved Termina from an unclear disaster. Just as many inhabitants of Hyrule have counterparts in Termina, the "Fierce Deity" is the Hero of Time's counterpart, the ancient tribe is the Sheikahs' counterpart, and Majora is an unknown previous leader of the Sheikah, or possibly someone like Bongo Bongo.
The four bosses that infest Termina's temples are ancient masks from the time of Majora's tribe, their souls twisted so extremely from the horrible rituals they were used in, that their transformation forms have become monsters. Majora's Mask carried these masks with him, much like he carried the Fierce Deity's mask.
Link is the Hero of Time, chosen by the three Goddesses to wield the Master Sword and defend Hyrule. He grew up with the Kokiri in the Lost Woods, believing that he himself was a Kokiri as well, but when the Gerudo King Ganondorf began to cause trouble around Hyrule, Link eventually left the forest and set out to defeat him.
Unfortunately, Ganondorf tricked Link and the young princess of Hyrule, Zelda, into opening the sealed Sacred Realm where a holy artifact known as the Triforce was kept. Using the Triforce, Ganondorf wished for power and for Hyrule to be his own, and to save Link's life he was sealed away in the Sacred Realm for seven years until he was ready to set back out into war-torn Hyrule and make things right again.
After cleansing the six tainted temples spread out across Hyrule, Link was reunited with Princess Zelda, who had been disguised as a Sheikah minstrel known as Shiek, and with her help and the help of the reawakened Sages, they attacked Ganon's castle. Ganondorf was defeated, but because he was carrying a third of the Triforce - while Link and Zelda carried the other two thirds - he could not be killed unless the final blow was dealt by the Master Sword. Using the Triforce of Power, he destroyed his own castle in an attempt to kill Link and Zelda, and when that fails, transformed into a hideous boar-like monster to kill them himself. Link manages to injure him gravely, however, and stabs him in the forehead with the Master Sword.
Although it didn't kill him, the Sages managed to seal him into the Sacred Realm, supposedly forever. With Hyrule free again, Princess Zelda sends Link back to his childhood, so that he can properly live the lost seven years of his childhood.
