Hey, ashfae, sorry it's taken so long to post this. I finished reading it over a week ago, but I had a con out of town right afterwards and things got crazy. ( Full liveblog here )
I was so suspicious of Ekaterin. I was entirely prepared to hate her, and at first I was pretty disappointed. She won me over. Especially in the next book. Yeah, I know, I'm not helpful.
Anyway, in addition to the abusive marriage factor I find her journey from a state of depression (in the clinical, "I live in a state of grey" sense) outwards both interesting and believable. I don't have experience with abuse (thank every god that might ever have been), but depression I know, and it resonated.
