Name: Death the Kid
Source: Soul Eater
History: Kid's story begins and ends with Shibusen. A school to train human weapons and their meisters, Shibusen was created under the ideal of keeping the balance between good and evil in the world. Specifically, it was created to prevent a kishin, or demon god, from running free to create madness. Originally, the school was built over the site of the sealing of the original kishin. However, this fact was kept secret to the general populace of Shibusen, including Death the Kid. The story begins this way, with things in a relatively peaceful state of being.
In normal times, the purpose of being in Shibusen is for the pair of weapon (a human capable of transforming into a weapon) and meister (a human whose soul is able to resonate with a weapon) to defeat corroded souls in danger of becoming a kishin. These souls, having fed on those of normal humans, are called kishin eggs. A weapon disposes of a kishin egg by taking its soul and devouring it. When a weapon has eaten 99 kishin eggs and the soul of a witch, they are able to become a Death Scythe -- the weapon of Shinigami, the leader of Shibusen. For Kid, however, the creation of a Death Scythe would not result in his weapons (a pair of sisters named Liz & Patty) being given over to the service of Shinigami, but rather in having created the ideal weapon for he himself to use. This is because Death the Kid is the son of Shinigami, and a shinigami in his own right.
When the witch Medusa, masquerading as the school nurse, enacts a plan to release the kishin, things in Shibusen start to go wrong. Initially she uses her own child, a kishin egg in itself, Crona. Kid has a run-in with Crona on the sea, then again becomes a part of the story when he is one of a small few that escape being locked in a tower while Medusa goes to release the kishin. Kid faces off against Free, a werewolf ally of Medusa, then races to the kishin to attempt to prevent its revival, along side with his friend Black Star. However, they fail and the kishin is revived and released upon the world.
After that, Shibusen begins the task of collecting Demon Tools, created by a mysterious figure called Eibon. During this search Kid discovers and unexpected link between Eibon and his father Shinigami, and begins to suspect that all is not right with Shibusen. However, after obtaining the final Demon Tool, his suspicions are proved false. With the help of Eibon's remaining soul, Shinigami takes control of the Demon Toll Brew, and uses it to move Death City itself, to which his soul is bonded, to the battlefield against the Kishin and his ally the witch Arachne. There Kid, along with Black Star and the heroine of the story, Maka Albarn, become the force sent again the kishin itself. Kid is unable to defeat the kishin, but in trying his soul connect the Lines of Sanzu which, while mostly unexplained, cause a great jump in Kid's power and a loss of power in Shinigami. In the end, Maka is the one to triumph over the Kishin, and after that life goes back to as normal as it ever gets.
Personality: Most people, when meeting Death the Kid for the first time, might expect him to be somewhat intimidating. Being a Shinigami and son of, well, the Shinigami, gives the boy a level of high-class, high-power refinement casting his speech and mannerisms in a very polite light. However, that stuffy surface is just that - a surface. After having spent a certain amount of time with Kid, a person might notice that he's deeply thoughtful, kind, and in possession of a very strong sense of justice. However, these things are likely to be pushed from said person's mind by the sheer force of Kid's obsessive-compulsive neuroses.
To Kid, symmetry is the pinnacle of beauty, and as such he attempts to surround himself with it at all times. In one instance, he arranges the medicine cabinet in Shibusen's dispensary into symmetry, and happily informs Maka, who is bedridden, that she'll now be able to sleep at night. He also keeps all of the decor and furniture in his mansion perfectly symmetrical in relation to the room. When faced with asymmetrical objects and particularly unbalanced enemies Kid is disgusted and irritated. In fact, a lack of symmetry will quickly increase his desire to fight in a battle, while a symmetrical enemy causes him to freeze while appreciating its beauty. Fortunately, his Shinigami body is capable of withstanding the damages caused when he does this. Outside of symmetry, Kid also suffers from basic compulsions of all sorts, including that he must fold his toilet paper into triangles.
Aside from his neuroses, however, Death the Kid is a perfectly functional boy. He attends school (though he fails tests by way of spending the whole time writing his name perfectly), makes friends, and goes on missions when required. With his friend he's quiet, laid-back, and polite at most times, though not at all opposed to a rousing game of basketball. He's insightful, but not one to put his opinions in other people's faces. In fact, this leads to his business side, in which he tends to be suspicious of adults and keeps serious things to himself. Rather than dragging other people into his concerns, he excludes even his weapons Liz & Patty from most of his inner thoughts. Kid's a loner, and will go out of his way to set things right by his sense of justice, even if that means not trusting the very people who are the foundation of those beliefs.
Biggest Fear: Losing faith in justice or in his father. Kid's not generally scared of monsters or the like, but being powerless against something is definitely a fear as well.
Powers: Most of Kid's powers center around his weapons, Liz & Patty. Their twin pistol forms allow him to fire his own soul energy at his enemies, usually quickly an efficiently. When he needs an especially powerful blast, he connects them together to perform "death cannon", a sort of laser cannon type attack that can blow most foes away. However, without them he isn't entirely helpless. He can summon a skateboard from his hand, which can fly and be used to perform some rather nifty acrobatic battle moves. He's also a good hand-to-hand fighter, as his Shinigami body is a lot stronger than his scrawny looks imply. Defensively, it takes a large amount of damage to count Kid out. He also heals naturally very quickly, though he is still "mortal" in that doing enough damage will actually kill him. Basically, one (or even a few) stabs in the torso won't do it, but shoot him between the eyes and he's gone.
SAMPLES:
Third Person: It was a matter of slivers, really. He'd found a razor sharp knife, and it was oh so easy to shave away tiny curls of red to reveal the white flesh beneath, gleaming with sweet moisture and making his mouth water. It had to be perfect, of course. The curves on all sides had to be even, smooth, symmetrical. But that was the hard part, wasn't it? Each time he peeled a little more off from one side, it would be just a tiny smidgen uneven, and he had to go all the way around again, trying to even it out. But each cut, each tiny bit lost made the whole thing smaller, and smaller, until it was a thin cyllinder with bits of green beginning to show. But finally, with seeds a paper's depth away from the surface, the apple was symmetrical.
Death the Kid stared at his handiwork for a bit, appreciating the smoothness and the perfect form of it, then at the pile of apple slivers next to it, slowly turning into a mushy, fused lump. He'd have to ask Liz to clean that up soon, before it made a real mess of the table. Of course, now he couldn't eat what was left of the apple either. After that hour of work, it was just too perfect to destroy that way. So he left it sit, lonely but beautiful and perfectly centered on its expensive china plate, and headed back to the kitchen. He'd find something else to eat-- something... easier.
First Person: Something is definitely wrong here. I've tried calling Father, but nothing seems to go through at all. Not the sigil, not the reflection -- nothing. What am I supposed to do now? There are noises outside, and I have the feeling they aren't just rats. If only Liz & Patty were here, I'd have this taken care of in moments.
Well, I may as well try it myself. I fought without them before, and I can do it now. I just wonder... why am I here at all?
Notes:
None really. But Kid IS a Shinigami, though alive, rather than already dead like the ones in some other canons. So would that have any special effect?
