As far as we can guess, there's a belt right next to the engine and it seemed to be getting smaller the longer the engine was on, and I found a scrap of rubber lying where I stopped the car the first time. So we think that the belt is somehow getting shaved down. I didn't try to drive it anywhere, just had it towed.
