Before towns and cities; before the European, etc., it was a common practice, depending on the weather, to allow "babies/toddlers" to go naked. When weather required more clothing, a cutout on the back side of clothing, allowed for a cleaner condition. Skinning out and preparing a hide, then cutting and sewing, was a difficult process. It is a practical thing, when you live in the forests or prairies and live, more or less, hand to mouth. Certain leaves, moss and soft grasses were used as "toilet paper". A quick dip in a stream or lake would also be useful to wash a child, again, depending on the weather. :o)
