As for the religion thing, I think with any religion (or cultures--any set of beliefs/rules/morals) it's good to not feel like you have to follow it 100%. IMO ironically it's easier to get lost if you follow one thing strictly and not have other options open.
Btw you should read "The Road Less Taken" or whatever it's called, this book I had to read in Psychology. It's an easy read and there's an interesting section on "religion." I put that in quotations because it's not about explanations of different religion, but rather, how people take in the religion (or not take in) can affect your behavior. Ask Sean for the book.

I agree completely. I can't understand why people would limit themselves to one set of beliefs and not study as many as possible. It's arrogant for people to think their knowledge of the universe is so complete that there's no need to seek answers elsewhere.
I'll check that book out, right now I'm reading Singularity is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology which is kind of what sparked this post.
