INTRO:
Let's play a game, let's say that Remus and Lily are friends. Let's say they spend about the same amount of time in the library at generally the same time of the day in somewhat the same area and there's a whole thing with book sharing and comfortableness and common ground as they both have at least a bit of Muggle in them and friendship yes. The only thing they really just can't seem to agree on is Remus' choice of friends. Not her, mind, because she's a perfectly good friend but those other friends of his. She just absolutely does not understand why someone like Remus -- quiet and intelligent and nice -- would hang about with the likes of James Potter and she tells him as much as often as she possibly can. He, of course, can't explain it -- James is just his friend. He doesn't approve of some of James' activities (ie, vicious bullying) but, you know, what's a guy to do? It's not like he can really control him and, really, even if maybe he could he wouldn't because he needs friends. He likes people to like him and especially James and Sirius and Peter because they've got that whole Marauder thing and whatnot.
Ahem. But he does like her. Very much so. She's pretty and clever and perhaps she even smells nice, all girlish and lovely. He likes to spend time with her and is rather calmed by her presence as she has not, at this point, tried to convince him to do anything that might get him killed and/or expelled. He tries to disarm as many explosive situations involving James and Sirius and Peter as he can without actually looking like he is because he doesn't want to rock the boat with them but wants her happy all the same. (1) Yes. And let's say that she forces him into agreeing to write letters and phone while they're out of school for holidays on the grounds that perhaps enough interaction with someone who isn't as entirely mentally stunted as his so-called friends would do him some good and also because she just rather likes him. And maybe he does write and phone and maybe he doesn't but he thinks about her constantly either way because she's wonderful. (2)
And at school it's even worse because they're very close and she's very pretty and he is utterly infatuated with every aspect of her. (3) But (!!) he's afraid to tell her that he likes her because she might not like him in return and, even if she did, which he highly doubts, he would have to tell her about the whole "I turn into a rabid beast every full moon" thing eventually which she might be all right with but, no, mostly he's sure that she'd just run screaming and never speak to him again. (4) Plus there's the fact that James has been mooning over her for years. And friends don't do that to friends.
So he doesn't. Tell her, I mean. (8) And then, even after all the years of despising James' supremely twatish ways, she ends up with him anyway. (9) Or maybe he does tell her. Maybe he does. Maybe he takes the risk (5) and lays all his cards out on the table (6) and maybe even kisses her and "Oh, Remus. You know how much I adore you but..." (7) And then she still ends up with James in the end. (9) And CRUSHED. And SADNESS. And ANGST. And REGRET. (10) And he tries to be happy for them or at least pretend he is but there's always still always that niggling voice in the back of his head telling him all about what could have been. (11) And then she dies. And he doesn't. The end. No matter how you slice it. (12)
The title is from the second track -- my favorite. The whole thing was inspired by too many listens to "Lily Two" -- damn that song. All tracks are mp3. Feel free to leave comments as I adore them. ;) And, uh... thank you for looking, I hope you enjoy it. ♥
