And to think I started the year off with only one character. Say hi to Kitty, boys and girls!

about kitty

First off, no, this isn't the same Kitty that was here before. This one is from the Marvel 616 universe, which means I lost my mind and actually braved comics canon. I KNOW, RIGHT?

Kitty is from Deerfield, IL (Chicago suburbs represent!), and a mutant. It just so happens that she has the ability to walk through walls and stuff. More on that in a bit. She was recruited to the X-Men when she was thirteen years old, and became the youngest X-Man ever, with the code name Shadowcat. And because time is fun in Marvel, at the point I'm bringing her in, she's only been doing it for five years, though there were like 25 years of canon for her by then. In those five years she's fought bad guys, gone to other worlds, gotten possessed by an older version of herself, became a ninja, and gained a purple alien dragon named Lockheed, among other things. (And no, Lockheed won't be coming with her AT THIS POINT IN TIME, ELAINE. Though I may have Ideas.)

Kitty is also going through a bit of a rough patch. Her ex-boyfriend died to stop the mutant-killing Legacy Virus (which killed his sister/Kitty's bff), so she quit the X-Men. And then her father was killed at Genosha in this big genocidal anti-mutant act, causing all these Issues for her. She was at the University of Chicago, working as a bartender and trying to see if it wasn't possible to have a normal life, but her temper got the better of her and she beat up a group of anti-mutant activists on campus, which got her sent into mandatory therapy. And then she had Sentinel robots hunting down her and her friends at school. So that normal life thing? Noooot going so well.

Which is where Fandom comes in. She's taking one more crack at it, and okay, coming in right after weetiny weekend and right before a BDE means she's going to figure out pretty quick that normal isn't gonna happen here. But she should get a taste of what tolerance feels like before I eventually send her back to canon where Joss Whedon is very, very mean to her. She'll be managing (not owning) Caritas, and while Kitty won't be advertising her powers at first, I figure that'll end about the time she figures out who's around and then she'll be back to walking through walls all over the place.

She's almost 19 years old at this point, and mature for her age. She's capable and quick on her feet and snarky. Also, given that she just came from somewhere where anger issues reigned, she might be a little quick to snap if she thinks you're being an idiot, but she's getting better about this. She's actually pretty peacefully-minded, is intolerant to intolerance, and an optimist. Also, she is awesome. Physically, Kitty is 5'6", 110 pounds, and pretty, with brown hair and hazel eyes. You might also see her in glasses from time to time which is maybe part of the reason I picked the PB I did. She'll be dressed pretty casually for day to day stuff, and for work she'll most likely be dressed like she's Bo because that's what she did at her last job and it worked. Tip well, boys and girls, tip well.

powers and skills

My girl can walk through walls! And people. And cars. And so on, and so forth. Without the sciencey stuff, she's able to make herself intangible so that she's able to pass through matter. This is called phasing. She can short out electronics when she phases through them, and is able to seemingly walk on air, or through water or fire by manipulating her own atoms. She's also able to take other people with her when she does it; if she's holding your hand and pulls you through a wall, you'll make it through unharmed. (One of the characters she brings with her describes it as feeling like walking through oatmeal. Take that as you will.) She also automatically goes intangible whenever there's trouble, as a protective measure. Literally, she's untouchable if she wants to be, but energy attacks can harm her, and some metals and materials can, too. (Sigh, Joss.)

Also she's a ninja. Years ago she was brainwashed and trained to be an assassin by a ninja demon, and she's able to take out scores of ninjas all at once now. She knows karate, ninjitsu, aikido and Krav Maga, though she's way less likely to use these and more likely to use phasing defensively somehow. And she got training with S.H.I.E.L.D.

Also she's a genius and computer whiz, which means she's skilled in programming and hacking and all that fun stuff. Also she's fluent in Russian, Japanese, a couple alien languages, and knows passable German, Latin and Hebrew. Also she's a professional-level dancer in ballet and modern dance.

So, in short, she's a teenage genius/ninja/secret agent/linguist/ballerina with superpowers and a pet dragon. Who isn't these days, right?

Questions? Comments? Pie? (Not you, Pinkie, the other kind of pie.)
