All I know is that it's windy.

I am going to Chicago this weekend for this.  I should have some extra time to explore, however.  I have never actually ventured into this "Midwest" they speak of, so if anyone knows of anything cool I should check out, please suggest it.  I place my potential future fun in your able hands, Livejournal.

I don't really know what kinds of cool things there are to see and do in Chicago, but I hope that you can figure out what the deal is with this whole "Chicago-style" pizza thing. It has never been quite clear to me.

Yes!! Restaurant suggestions would be highly prized. I'm looking at a place called the Chicago Diner right now and it appears to be an establishment firmly dedicated to deliciousness. Comments?

I went there yesterday, and the food was AMAZING but the desserts were very so-so. Also, it's a little pricey.

The best place to eat ever, on the face of the planet, anywhere, is Soul Vegetarian. The prices are reasonable, and who can object to vegan soul food?

Ha, I discovered this last night when I hastily ordered a slice of "cheese" cake because it was purple. The color was about all it had going for it. But my meal was awesome, and I think I'm going back for brunch if I can. Soul Vegetarian it is!

Also, if you're ever in Athens, Ga, you must must must try The Grit.

I like Chicago; it's the landscape Gotham City was based on. They have an above-ground train system called the CTA that is similar to riding a poorly assembled rollercoaster owned by a terrible circus. The pizza there is awesome, and when I was there it was also a great place to find countercultural clothes and cool restaurants. Boystown area was pretty interesting in the mid to late 90's, as was Jewtown (in an entirely different way -- it is, or at least was, completely abandoned after the big fires). It's got a lot of regionalism, and more nighttime crime than a lot of places. It's creepy and full of black skyscrapers and crime, it has a weird sort of gritty intrigue. I'm definitely jealous.

Gritty intigue seems like a good way to describe what I've seen so far. This is the most stereotypically urban place I've ever been. Last night I got called out by a stranger for being "from the country" on the basis of my "manners". I have decided that it is not to be helped and was glad that it was my cultural rather than follicular roots that tipped him off.

Thanks for the tips!

Dude, my boyfriend and I were walking down the street, and... well, even within my city, many folks have percieved him as queer. In fact, when we were in the flirting stage, I suspected he might just be a flirty queer. But he wasn't. Anyway, we were walking down the streets of Chicago, and we walked past this dude whose face washed over with complete DISGUST and anger, and he screamed, "FAGGOT ASS WHITE BOY WHAT THE FUCK YOU WALK ROUND THIS CITY FOR?!"

This is probably not the same calling out by strangers that you meant, but I thought I would share.

Mine was considerably less hostile (it was on the way out of the Chicago Diner), but you've got to hand it to the Midwesterners: their reputation for frankness is not undeserved.
