Twenty-One
“It was a plant in.” Ryo looks incredulously at the book empty of underground contacts and black accounts.
“Toma made it out just in time.” Jun whispered more to himself than anyone else. He spared a brief glance at the rear-view mirror at Toma sitting expressionless at the back as Ryo gripped the little black book tight.
But Jun knew that Toma didn’t come out the same person he went in. He was oddly contemplative and not his usual cheery nosy self. He kept his arms wrapped around himself.
He put the person all this was done to protect, in the most danger. Jun wanted to more now than ever embrace the other man and console him of the things that were bothering him, coax him to share. But there was Ryo beside him constantly reminding him of a failed mission and a failed peace agreement whose breach had fatal consequences.
“Shachou will make Toma go back.” Ryo concluded quietly, his voice heavy with regret.
“I don’t want to go back.” Toma’s sudden reply startled both Ryo and Jun, “I can’t, not after you said you’d save me.” He hugged himself again but other than that there was little change in his posture.
“Tell them I did it. Deny all involvement and I’ll call Aiba when I can procure a new number.”
“What do you want to do?” Ryo questioned not quite having caught up
“Run.”
