Note: Don't ask about the summary. It's Part of A Multichapter

A church door opens and the piano plays a morbid tune, the choir gets ready and a few tears are shed. Jun traces the black wood of the coffin with his palm flat on the surface and looks up. The choir sings and a man smiles. A bright light in darkness. A smile returned to a smile given. A smile that says, ‘there is tomorrow’

Jun falls for the promise. Until he is hurtling the mourning of a love lost to the suppressed, careful joy of a love found.

Ohno Satoshi is a quiet man who derives simple pleasures from his music. He had first come to the house in a baggy t-shirt and a kind smile. A slight bow and a guitar. He offered his condolences and begged to be able to dedicate a song to Jun. Toma saw how Jun smiled. In the dark, ominous atmosphere of the house it shone through and Toma saw it like a nova. It was almost impossible to look at them just as it had been at the day of Ryo’s funeral.

But Toma looks, he looks because that is all he had; stolen glances and brotherly adoration. Nagase grunted as he set down the tea in front of the two. He had good reason too. Jun heart fluttering at the quiet and serene face asked for guitar lessons he had no interest in taking. Taichi dusted the piano whereas Toma sat atop it.

After a month of guitar lessons, the brushes grew less gentle and much less accidental, the distances became shorter, the formalities decreased until there were none and before Toma knew it there was an extra set of dishes to be washed every night. Toma wanted to tell Jun that it was going too fast, that Ryo had died not 6 months ago, it was too early to fall in love. Love was constant and unchanging and in Toma’s case ever growing. It seemed like Taichi wanted to say something but he couldn’t. How could he? When Jun skipped and trotted with a lightness he had seemingly lost months before Ryo’s death and so Taichi remained silent while Nagese grunted and Toma looked.

Was having Ohno around really that bad though? It was hard for Toma to see Jun wink at him mysteriously as he came quickly downstairs and grabbed two beers before rushing up. It was harder when that was done in boxers. Jun’s life with Ohno was happier and certainly more cheerful because more often than not Ohno would be strumming his guitar singing this song and that. And sometimes Nagase danced and sang along. Jun had given up after that first month of lessons and soon Taichi could be seen tapping his feet as he flipped pancakes in the morning, a bright purple apron tied around his front and an even brighter smile. Toma was kind of sick of it all and would spend most of his time studying. His teacher talked about college last week and it interested him. Jun had always been fond of the topic of Toma’s education.

Of course being a socialite as he was with all that inherited money and status Jun had many acquaintances in the entertainment industry, the police, journalists, and artists, you name it. To Toma it had seemed that Jun had finally settled with Ohno. The first few months it had seemed just a case of rebound and passion but whatever PDA the two cared to share and thankfully not much especially when he, a poor impressionable kid, was around. Kisses exchanged were more sweet and loving and cuddling, Toma saw so much cuddling he wished they would just suck it up and be adults and fuck or something.

That was all until of course one of Jun’s many acquaintances from the music industry came for a visit. The music director had come with the hopes that Jun would star in his song’s music video but ended up offering Ohno, strumming his guitar complacently in the garden, an offer to debut in the company he worked with.

Jun had been excited he had said yes right away but there was a hesitant eagerness in Ohno, you could see it in the shine of his naturally tired eyes and he ran his hand through his hair like he was perplexed.

But opportunities don’t often come literally knocking on your door and who but Ohno would know that better. For a while it was hard for him to believe that what he had long since given up on had finally turned around and come running to him. It was like a dream and Ohno had been so very attentive to Jun during the recording of the new song and all through promotions. Jun wasn’t home very often anymore but Toma wasn’t spared, Ohno’s songs would blare up on TV every few minutes and Nagase would beat his eggs with a rhythm Toma thought he never possessed.

Success was natural, so very natural, backed up by power and money and a decent modicum of talent Ohno was boosted to the top immediately. Jun had to be kept a secret for publicists weren’t entirely too certain how would a gay artist fair in the market and Ohno seemed genuinely sorry for that. Jun had brushed it off like it was nothing.

Good things don’t last though. Fame, attention, money, power and stress. Ohno’s second album was under so much scrutiny due to the success of his first that Ohno was clearly disturbed, he would spent hours locked up in a room and Jun was lonely, it was all too obvious that whenever Jun agreed to play cards with Toma his mind was somewhere else but Toma was happy with this half-hearted interest. Somehow it was better, He felt better knowing that in times of need he better than anyone else could support Jun.

Things got worse from then on. Ohno stopped coming home and Jun was worried that he spent too much time in the studio. Ohno’s manager called Jun to check up on Ohno’s progress and it was after a bewildered, ‘he said he would work from home’ that Jun started really worrying about Ohno and about them.

And then it happenend.

The scandal.

Taichi took the morning paper and his face turned white as sheet. Jun was already screaming for his tea and newspaper by then. Taichi bolted out the door in order to throw the paper away but Jun saw him and stopped him. He demanded the paper and reluctantly it was handed over and there on the bottom of the page was Ohno with a dopey smile, two half naked girls in his arms doing goodness knows what to him

Yet Another Talent Falls Weak To Addiction

Jun shook with fear, shock and rage and the sting of betrayal. He called Ohno’s manager who was just as unknowing and perplexed of the situation as Jun himself. Ohno was hauled in 3 days later. Toma didn’t even want to ask what had happened. Ohno was chained to the bed and Toma knew, Toma knew because he saw what pain Jun went through everyday ignoring that chubby innocent face pleading him to be let go and couldn’t he just have a tiny little shot, please?

But Jun was determined to save his relationship, he told Ohno he loved him everyday and Toma heard it everyday, he’d go to Jun’s bedroom everyday just when it was time for Ohno’s medication to see the scene of Jun professing his love and receiving a tirade of insults in reply but Ohno was just out of his mind and Jun understood that part. He understood that part until Ohno had started to get better and was let off the leash, helped around with house chores and replied to an ‘I love you’ with a peck on the cheek. Everything was getting better and Jun, Jun had finally got what he had hoped for. His love back.

It was because of this tireless effort that when Ohno jeopardized their relationship once more it was the last straw for Jun. Toma saw as Jun flipped over Ohno’s shoes only for a packet of snuff to fall out how his face had gone into a state of calm acceptance. He remembers seeing that same expression on Jun’s face before. That was a long time ago.

The next day Toma is out in the garden for a session of math under the sun when he sees Ohno lying on the ground covered in dirt and insects. The peacefulness of it all so very unsettling that he goes for a closer look.

He freezes for a moment in pure, utter horror.

When he hands the day’s paper to Jun the next day, that same grotesque feeling of the previous day lingers as he catches a glimpse of the headline.

“Thousands Shed Tears Over Heartthrob Fallen Prey to Heroin Over Dosage”

Toma wonders if Jun counts as one of those thousands.
