So Monday evening - drove to supermarket for stuff we needed (and partly to avoid catching whatever hubby has, as he's convinced it's swine flu, and I can't afford to be off work for 2 weeks). Picked up some cider and some doughnuts, and declared my tea to be doughnuts forraged and brought home on my first "proper" drive out solo.
Tuesday - drove down to the services on junction 2 of the M42 (not actually going on the motorway) for lunch with a friend driving past. Noticed needed petrol, so popped back out for petrol after rush hour, and then pootled along the A435 to junction 3, got ON the motorway, off at 2, on again (practice practice) and then drove to junction 5 of the M5 and back.
Today - up at 6, out at 7 to miss traffic, solo trip on the motorway, and drove to Weston-super-Mare, which I am reliably informed by
pauln years back is the closest sandy beach to us (or one of em). Stood on windy, but not stormy beach, pootled around, had lunch with friend, came back, setting off around 2ish to again avoid traffic...of which there was more on the way back, it must be said. But the worst things that happened were:
- silver BMW driver tried to get into boot, and then went zooming past me when the outer lane declogged slightly (this was at a moving steadily at 60 but fair bit of traffic section).
- started pulling across and noticed someone in my blindspot so pulled back in, don't think I'll make that mistake again tho.
- drove friend to his place, and he said moving from 1st to 2nd to 3rd I was a teeny bit jerky. And that I didn't notice far enough ahead a lights just after a roundabout...I suspect that was nerves of a) having one of my most critical friends in the car, b) getting used to the car still and c) not knowing the road as well as he. On the good news front that was pretty much all he complained about *ahem* constructively criticised me for :) Have informed him that if he doesn't like my driving he doesn't have to drive with me in future, so yes I likes this driving malarky.
Got very yawny & tired after about 20 minutes of being in Weston, but a coffee and muffin helped that along. Haven't got very tired and yawny yet from drive back, but I suspect that's cos I had parents, friend and sibling to phone to let them know I was back safe.
Think I shall be visiting Ju tomorrow...may go A435 M42, rather than through Brum, but realistically speaking, the things I really want to face now are: Five Ways roundabout (working just off Broad St next week!), service stations on motorways, city driving...but not too much too fast just yet. Must not give into temptation to drive over to
rinkyandmerlin's tonight just cos...silly waste of petrol.
