Re: Your Brains - Now in Japanese!

Ever since I saw Jonathan Coulton recorded his office zombie song "Re: Your Brains" in French, I thought, "Hey, I could do a Japanese translation." Then a friend pointed out Avril Lavigne was releasing one of her singles with the chorus translated into various languages, including Japanese, and I thought, "I should really get on that Japanese ( Read more... )

My favourite line is "Ii hanashi darou- datte me o kuu wake janai" (we're not unreasonable- I mean, no one's gonna eat your eyes," because it fits perfectly!)

This is what I do in my spare time. Sometimes I worry about me.

Not quite right. anonymous December 20 2008, 10:32:52 UTC
Don't mean to nitpick (kind of ironic considering the subject at hand), but your use of the Japanese language is a bit off. And I'm being subtle and Japanese-like when I say that, which means it is actually way off.
I wouldn't normally jump in with the bad news like this but your site is linked directly from the song page on JoCo's site, and I'd really rather that incoming visitors not think this is a proper translation. Because it isn't.
For a beginner, it is a nice attempt though. It's not painfully wrong (the grammar is mostly correct), just subtly different than what it should be (particularly the choice of wording - it sounds too much like you're forcing the often-wrong Japanese words to fit the English structure of the original).
I know this sort of statement is likely to provoke the reply "Well, can YOU do better?" - I probably can, and now that I have the idea in my head, I may do just that.

Dear Anonymous,

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. I stand by the choices I made in translating this song.

I'm considering trying to sing this, possibly as a duet along with a friend of mine. We've sung the English version before, and we like singing Japanese stuff as well.
Thank you for translating it, this is going to be rather fun :D
