I really want to write Kirk/Spock. And I also find it problematic.
Problematic because Spock is in a relationship with Uhura. And I like Uhura, and I think that she is awesome.
I do not like some of the ways I`ve seen fandom treating her (though some of this is at secondhand, i.e. gleaned from posts dissecting her treatment.) I am not even going to deal with the suggestion that she is a Mary Sue beyond a loud, disbelieving snort.
I do think that the movie advanced Uhura to the status of a major character and changed the main three- Spock, Kirk, McCoy- to a main four. And I am glad. Glad that her skills are recognized, glad that the relationship was treated respectfully and without reducing her to her body, without voyeuristic love scenes. The tenderness of it I find touching. In short, I do not think that adding a relationship between her and Spock did anything but increase the awesome all around.
Which is why I find it problematic that fic has to get around her to get to the Kirk/Spock. The best way (in a realm of middling choices) is by having them be already broken up. Fine, I can deal with that. But I have also, in my brief immersion in the fandom, seen `Uhura realizes that Kirk and Spock are in love, which makes her realize her own feelings are platonic` to `What about Uhura`- `Not important.` right before they tumble into bed.
So the fangirlish part of me very much enjoys the Kirk/Spock. But I do not want to be a part of disappearing or maligning or mistreating a strong, awesome female character. I have had this feeling in other fandoms, when fans turn on female characters, but I have never come up against it personally before. Now, because my desire to commit fic comes right smack up against it, I have to confront it.
So. Any thoughts, fannish friends?
Unlocked for the moment.
