I'm sure I read that at the time, but since I hadn't read Asprin in so long, it didn't catch hold in my head. He seems like he was a really nice guy.

Yeah. Sadly tax problems (and I think a divorce) cut his writing career short for a several years. When he went back to writing, it was with all co-authored stuff, because anything that he was sole author, the IRS apparently got most of the money.

Yeah, kind of like with the Harry Potter books, in some of the later ones the protagonist's brooding gets too tiresome, even if that is part of the point.
