Ok guys I never do this but I need help bad. I just bought a Simpletech external 500GB USB hard drive so I can backup my porn work. The quick instructions on the HD states that if I will be using both Mac OSX and Windows environments, that I should format the drive as a FAT32 Volume, because the drive is preformatted as NTFS. Now, I am running ( Read more... )

I used to be so proficient about all that, but when you're talking about a Mac environment? I'm not too good.

Good luck.

I would use an app that is part of Mac OS called "Disk Utility" to do the formating. You can format the drive as MS-DOS (FAT) and it should work in both Windows & Mac.

If you have anymore questions just ask here or IM me.

thanks man! it appears I may have to make a decision. the size limit on FAT is going to be a factor - as I sometimes work with huge ass movie files. I suppose I can partition the drive, one with NTFS and one with FAT32 but only problem is windows has problems with multiple partitions. So either that or I make a single partition FAT32 drive and keep all my files under 4GB and get a separate drive all together for my huge ass movie files.

thanks alot for your feedback!

Just remember, once you go FAT, you never go back!

Be forewarned, If you have files that are 4GB or larger that you want to backup you will not be able to copy them onto a drive that has been FAT32 formated regardless of the amount of free drive space.

file limitations, gotta luv them -- ugh. Even though FAT32 would be best for cross compatability, it's still limited :( thanks for the info!

right now I use windows the most (my desktop) however I was thinking of getting an Apple Desktop in the not-so-distant future. I can cater to a preferred OS and just use software like Macdrive for PC and Paragon or MacFuse for Mac to be able to write but my dillema is I don't want to make it more complicated than it already is. I guess I'll just have to keep my files under 4GB and format to FAT32 :(
