I just totally had all of my hopes and dreams destroyed in a matter of seconds. Literally.
I had been thinking about going to SMU's Guildhall program after I finished school here. The program is incredible. Hands down one of the best career-focused programs I have ever seen. Now, I knew there was an issue with tuition before I even began looking into the school. It's SMU for god's sake! But they do not really cover on the site how much that tuition is. The only costs they go over are the application fee and the tuition cost to earn a Master's degree from them (which is only $5k! I was thoroughly surprised).
But um....I just went and searched for the tuition price, and they want $51k.
This really upsets me. My hopes went soaring through the freaking ceiling when I was looking at the curriculum and portfolios. But I can not justify spending that much money on further education. Especially not when I'm almost at that point already (fucking Art Institute...).
Ah well, what can you do. I'm just going to have to find the drive to get better at what I want to do personally.
Ah, so on a higher note, I had a small gallery show this weekend. It was great fun, because it was totally guerrilla! We rented an Enterprise truck, parked it in a random spot on a street full of galleries for "gallery night", and set up. The woman who owned the business there loved it, except she actually hated it at first. I guess someone called and told her that there's something weird going on outside her business, so she made a personal visit. I ended up being the one taking the brunt of that for a bit (and let me tell you, she was PISSED!) but our lovely teacher managed to talk her down out of her rage. She ended up letting us stay. No harm done.
Anyways, I had two pieces in the show. They were hybrid, "taxidermy" creatures! I was thinking about how freaking cool it would be to have whatever animals you wanted smooshed into one, and how absurd most people would choose. So what did I combine?
This is an Angler Fish/Crow combo!! It was such a joy to create. Internets cookie goes to the first person to guess what those teeth are made of. :D
Here's a 3/4 view.
Aaaand this is a Mongoose/King Cobra combo. Oh my goodness, he was waaaaaaay too much fun to make. K has taken up calling him Ralphie May. I don't know why, you'll have to go ask him. O_o The fur I used is incredibly soft, so people kept petting him. Hah!
Aaand a frontal view. :3
Ten internets cookies if you can tell me what's absurd about these combos. No hints...not that you need one or anything. Ahah!
An interesting outcome of this show is that the director for
The Dallas Center for Contemporary Arts, who's name is
Joan Davidow, was incredibly interested in my work. O_O! So much so that she really wants to talk to me about it.
*SCREAMS*
I don't know what this means for me, but OH MY GOD! What if she wants a commission?!?!!?! WHAT DO I DO?!!
*faints*
