Movie #21 - GI Joe - The Rise of Cobra

So let's set things straight from the start - GI Joe is not really something I grew up with, never had toys, or watched, or read.

So I guess that means I have nothing to compare it to, and went into this film without really having an idea of what I would see. I mean, I didn't even know that Channing Tatum or Joseph Gordon-Levitt were in it!

But all in all, I guess it was ok in the no brainer, all explosions kind of way. The story was not really great, the flashbacks a bit weirdly built in, and all the surprise moments absolutely not surprises. However the action and fighting sequences looked good and were entertaining enough to keep me distracted until the end of the film, which I guess is what it aimed at.

I do have 2 questions after watching the movie though:
- why did they yet again feel the need to destroy Paris? *rolls eyes* Is there no other city out there?
- How can one have very good AND very bad special effects all in one film?

In the end, my favorite moments ended up having nothing to do with the film itself, and had more to do with my geeky side: I had a kick out of seeing Arnold Vosloo and Brendan Fraser both sort of guest staring in this film directed by Stephen Sommers, who directed them in The Mummy :) Yes, I am a movie geek...

All in all, I guess I could recommend this for an evening where you are bored and have no idea what to do... However I will not see the 2nd one, even if they try to corrupt me by putting Bruce Willis in it.

movie, gi joe rise of cobra
