My colleagues and I were momentarily startled and alarmed as jets streaked LOW over campus a moment ago, causing quite a roar even indoors. Then we started giggling: UT plays Air Force tomorrow. Those show-off flyers have a certain panache.

It's like the Blue Angels. Dash it all, you don't want to encourage them, but there's something so fun and rakish about brightly colored multi-million dollar planes buzzing your workplace or home.

I was on the phone with my folks once a day or two before the Miramar Air Show, and an enormous roar came from outside. "What was that?" my dad asked. I stepped out on the balcony and glanced up at the sky. "Oh, that was Blue Angels 5 and 6."

Hurrah for college football! Northwestern is playing the Wildcats of New Hampshire this weekend. how am I supposed to cheer for the Wildcats against the Wildcats? We former band geeks are quite addlepated.
