Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

Spoilers behind the cut-tag after some non-spoiler remarks.

10 PM, local indie bookstore. Cloak - check. Red hair - check.
Weasley-ish spouse - check. Prepaid book card - check. I entered the shop to find my
half-baked costume out-shone by several fully-baked ones. There were two

You didn't think maybe it would be Snape who would buy the farm due to the Unbreakable Vow? If I hadn't known (damn all spoilers to hell!) that DD would die, Snape might have worked as a diversion for me.

Snape seems to me to still be on the side of good, albeit a continuing world class asshole.

I wonder if the reason Albus trusted Snape so much was that he'd made an unbreakable vow to protect the Order or possibly to protect Harry. That would explain why he won't acutally attack Harry and keeps protecting him while hating his guts.

Well-spotted. I fenced varsity at NU in 1997-1998, my first year of graduate school. I sparred with the club for the next few years while I worked on my degree.
