Yesterday I saw a soft shelled spiny turtle in a local river. I was on an observation deck maybe fifteen feet up the limestone bank, and I looked down and saw it swirl upwards out of the deep brown water. Giant pancake turtles! They're so awesome :D I had a lady show up at the nature center earlier this year with a huge one stuffed in one of those re-usable grocery bags; she'd saved it from being hit by cars crossing a road. We took it down to the lake and let it go - amazing how fast they can swim! It was crawl-crawl-crawl-hit-the-water-ZOOM-AND-GONE!
