“These precious things Let them bleed Let them wash away These precious things Let them break their hold over me”
THE MUSIC: According to the Music Genome Project, the song features acoustic rock instrumentation, a subtle use of vocal harmony, repetitive melodic phrasing, extensive vamping, demanding instrumental part writing, a clear focus on recording studio production, minor key tonality, an emotional female lead vocal performance, use of ambient synths, prominent percussion, use of odd meter and heavy instrumental improvisation.
THE FACTS: “Precious Things” is track number 4 on Tori’s debut solo album Little Earthquakes. In spite of it having become a mainstay with Tori fans, at the time of the album’s issue, the song was not featured as a single, even though the album produced a total of five such releases, a daunting number for a debut effort. On VH-1’s Storytellers, Tori famously reminisced on how the song came about: "Precious Things is a song that came to me when I was living behind a church. And I was about 24 years old. I had a roommate that listened to really ruckus music and it started to take me into flashbacks of my grandmother. And she used to put me in a corner and she would read me something, I think from Leviticus, I can't remember. But, umm… she was convinced that I was gonna give my soul to God and my body to a man that I would marry. Umm… but at five years old I knew that we were enemies, so in my mind I was always trying to find ways to get away from this creature. So I thought of things and my mother thought I was a demon for thinking them. But I think she would smile out of the corner, because I think she felt the same way. So behind this church with this music going on and on in my head. I started to really think that maybe just one day, I could run faster." YOU are one of Tori’s concert mainstays - initially not a single, “Precious Things” became a favorite with audiences early on and never really left the set-lists. And in real life, too, you seem to find yourself ‘typecast’ as everybody’s pet. It might have something to do with you appearance of vulnerability. Only, you should know, this type of personality projection has deep, dark roots. Chances are your self-image is far from stellar. Perhaps at some point you were deemed the ugly duckling and felt the need to overcompensate. In any event, there is a strong likelihood that you have had trouble in defining your sexual persona and/or identity and this has made you an easy target. Your reasons are not as selfish as you think; in fact, they tend to be pretty pure. For you, love is everything and you would go to any great lengths just to have it. You are willing to give anything up and to change yourself in every conceivable way, just to make sure love stays with you. Problem is, love as you envision it won’t come from the type of people you tend to attract. You crave attention and, demure as your demeanor may be, it’s gotten you in some pretty unhealthy relationships. Perhaps you’ve already reached the point where you feel you need to ‘run faster’, perhaps not. In any event, building up self-confidence and learning to validate yourself instead of seeking the approval of romantic partners is more likely to fulfill your emotional needs than the self-obliterating habits you’re into right now.
