YAY Mary/Irene. This is so lovely and gives me a contented little smile. I love this in-depth look into Mary's head and the way that Irene makes her feel content just as she is, no longer frustrated by life and its perceived requirments.
Thanks so much. :D I'm glad that you enjoyed it. It's sad, but the frustration that Victorian women tended to suffer from makes them fascinating... I really liked trying to flesh out Mary's character a little. It's good to know that I didn't do a completely horrible job of it. :P
Thanks, Mistress Leafsilver! I'm so glad you liked it. :D I've only just started reading The Sign of Four, but I tried to take some elements of Mary's character from the book canon as well as the film... I'm not sure if that worked... (Yes, I'm reading the books all out of order; it's terrible.)
I'd really like to write some more Mary/Irene. I have this idea for a shamelessly cute fic where Irene drags Mary off on an adventure with her. Which will probably involve robbery and cross-dressing and playing detectives.
Oh, this was sweet and eloquent and inspiring and altogether wonderful; I'm very glad you wrote it.
(Also, for some reason, I heard the line "Lots of fat little pink English babies" in Emma Thompson's voice. I thought you might be interested in knowing.)

That bit about Emma Thompson honestly makes me beyond happy. Obviously her effect on me has been even more insidious than I thought.
