Wait on Ottawa, hold out for the good camera. A good camera is an investment for the long term and well worth it.

What are you thinking about with regards to the camera?

If I had $500US to spend, I think I'd go with a Nikon D40 for digital, but would be sorely tempted by a complete 35mm film setup including a small enlarger and darkroom equipment. I'm somewhat biased towards old-school film photography and printing - sweating in a stuffy darkroom late at night, burning and dodging by hand, working by trial and error and watching images slowly appear on the paper as you swish it rhythmically back and forth in the tub of developer. It's part art, part science, part ritual magic, and something I think every photographer should experience at least once.

Actually, on second thought I'd go with a cheap used medium-format film setup rather than 35mm film. Don't know what I was thinking there. :)

I would get what you really want. Hold off, on getting a camera. When you go to Ottawa and just use those cheap disposable ones.

Or you could come here and you can use mine. Woot!
