One of my friends is running a contest to win an investment property she owns up in Oregon (I believe near Eugene.)

details are here Even if you're not interested, if you're part of Digg, they could use help boosting the story up to get more exposure for it, again, the link for that is provided within her post.

Someone out in Florence tried something similar last year.

In addition to getting investigated for violating state lottery laws, which I'm sure was a lot of fun, he didn't make enough money to make it worthwhile, and the people who'd sent in their however-much-it-was for a chance came after him to get their money back.

If she's a friend of yours, I'd tell her to consult a lawyer first.

I will suggest it, though they have written in that if they don't make enough money, they'll return the money to everyone who entered.

They also have made it an actual contest, rather than a lottery, which might save them from the lottery laws, but I'll make sure that they've checked those.

Yeah -- after reading the series of newspaper articles about the guy in Florence, I concluded that it's a LOT less work to just hire a real estate agent. The liability on running something like this...well, it's going to appeal to exactly the sort of crackpot person who's liable to file small-claims cases. Having gone through that process in this county, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
