Adam sat back, using every bit of willpower he could to try and hold back that jealousy and anger webbing up in his very gut.
He could almost feel it bubbling over like a pot of boiling water as he watched Nick Armstrong's arm wrap gently around Cassie Blake's shoulder and how he drew her close. My Cassie was all Adam could think, except he knew she wasn't his. He had let her go because it was the right thing to do. He was with Diana Meade, and he did love her, had since they were children. Nothing had ever shaken that before, he never thought anyone could make him think, or want otherwise. What he felt for Cassie was the strongest thing Adam had ever felt for anyone. Meeting her in Cape Cod before she had ever come to New Salem he'd felt it then. He'd felt that silver cord binding them heart to heart. Part of him was glad he had to leave, and walk away that day. It had made it all easier because he could just go back to Diana and nothing would change, or so he thought. Thinks were already different after that. It was like something had opened his eyes more and made everything clearer. He hadn't thought he'd ever see her again.
Except when he came back with the crystal skull expecting to see Kori Henderson firmly in place in the coven, he was surprised to find Cassie there. Confused then as to why she didn't seem to want anyone to know they had ever met before that. He had gone along with it making note to talk to her later. He couldn't deny there was a pull to her and he often found himself looking at her. He wanted to know what it'd feel like to run his fingers through her hair, or to look into those blue eyes of hers before he kissed her. They were thoughts he shouldn't be having, not when he had a girlfriend who he loved. Things changed when he was asked to take Cassie home one night. He finally got her alone and could ask her why she was hiding the fact they had met before. When she told him she was in love with him he felt a jolt, a skip in his heart beat. Before he knew it he was telling her he loved her too and he could feel a surge of energy between them and that night on the bluff he kissed her. Her lips had felt so perfect against his and he thought he could do that forever. That is until realization sunk in on both of them, they were betraying Diana. So they had made a blood oath: Not by look, work, or deed. Neither of them wanted to betray Diana's trust or to hurt her. Except Adam wasn't sure he could do this because already e so much wanted to go tell Nick to get his hands off of Cassie.
"Adam?"
Adam was brought out of his thoughts by Diana's words and smiled, leaning in he kissed her gently.
"Yes?"
"Are you okay Adam? You seem out of it."
"I'm fine Diana, just a little tired I guess."
"Come dance with me."
"Now how can I say no to that?"
He smiled as he and Diana stepped onto the dance floor, and he drew her close. He'd push Cassie out of his mind, he had to. Diana was his girlfriend and he did love her. The dance ended and he leaned back watching his friends, his coven having a good time. What he saw next made his stomach tighten, and his jaw set. Nick was kissing Cassie, kissing those lips he'd been longing for since that night on the bluff. His fists clenched and he fought it all back, pushed it down. He was Diana's, and Cassie was Nick's. It's how it had to be, even if he hated it. He'd learn to live with it. He turned and kissed Diana goodnight.
"I'm not feeling too well Diana. I think I'm just going to head home."
"Want me to come with you?"
"No you stay, have fun. You are the Coven leader you should stay."
He turned leaving the ceremony and going home. Not daring a glance in Cassie's direction lest he give away their secret, what they swore an oath not to do. He just needed to get away, away from watching the woman he was in love with, with another man. He spent the night trying to shake the image from his mind.
