OK, so I'm going into contracting. I have a domain name registered, and I'd like to be able to receive e-mail to me@domainname, forwarded to my existing gmail address. At some point in the future I'll set up a website, but I don't need or want to do that now

I believe you'll need someone to host the dns (directory name server) record for you, which includes cname records and stuff. you won't need a full "web host" service with disk space and whatever gigabytes of traffic a month, just dns.

It will probably cost a few dollars a month. Your ISP should be able to sort it out for you. You could optionally shop around - take a look at this from orcon (under Domain Names) http://www.orcon.net.nz/web_hosting_business/
