Albany - I die a little every time

This is the third time I have stayed in Albany. Each time I become appalled and depressed. There's something about Albany that I find utterly soul destroying. It feels empty, devoid of a soul, it is a vacuum. And I'm trying to work out what's wrong with it (or with me ( Read more... )

I hate to be a reductionist snob about it but there is them and there is us and I'm jolly glad that you are part of us and that them lock themselves up in places like that so that us doesn't have to live with them.

Or something.

Yeah but I wonder to what extent the suburb creates the people? I've heard plenty of stories of closed minded people becoming more open through exposure to things that they didn't expect. I suspect that Albany greatly reduces the possibility of encountering the unexpected, and so you get a vicious circle of self-selection for living here followed by reinforcement through never being challenged. Maybe I'm reading too much into town planning however ...

I suspect that it is reinforcement of an already present mindset in terms of the people who buy there, and I think you are correct in your thought that because they are 'developed' rather than grow then they don't have a chance to grow a soul.
