“Well, if it isn’t The Twins,” Mitch Dawnolds scoffed, smirking slightly. “Late again? What’s your excuse this time?”

Melaney let out a quiet sigh, glancing up at Katherine. She was usually the one to swing first, ask questions later. Mel had to hold her back quite a few times. She just dropped her book bag into a desk in the far corner of the room, and went to The Cage to check out an enlarger station. Every now and then she’d glance back at Kat to make sure she didn’t do anything stupid.

Katherine dropped her own bag on the table part of the desk Melaney chose and pulled out her notebook and her ipod.

Mitch stared at the back of Katherine’s head, just waiting for her to blow. She always blew up, not like Melaney. It was more fun to messing with Kat. “Kaatie,” he drawled, stepping closer. “I asked a question. You’re just going to ignore me? I mean me?”

Katherine clenched her teeth, stuffing her ipod into her jeans pocket. “Ignore him,” she thought to herself. “Ignore him, he’ll go away.”

“Katie, baby,” Mitch continued, closer now. He touched her shoulder. “Come on, you know you can’t ignore me.”

Melaney turned around, her enlarger key in hand, and was ready to get her photo paper from the locker she and Kat shared, but she stopped seeing the scene. She watched Katherine nervously.

That did it. Katherine didn’t like to be touched, or be called Katie. She spun around, glaring at the guy behind her. “Don’t touch me!” she snapped. This made Mel wince. This won’t end well.

Mitch just smirked. “What’s wrong, Katie? You sure loved it when I touched you before. You melted,” he drawled.

Katherine clenched her fist. “Stuff it, Dawnolds!” she snapped. “We’re not dating anymore, so fuck off.”

Melaney bit her lip, watching. Mitch had only wanted in Kat’s pants. He was close too. Kat had told Mel all about it. There was a party, at Mitch’s place. There were always parties at Mitch’s place, his parents were never home, nor did they care what happened. Well, accorded to Mitch they didn’t care. Mel was supposed to go too, but she got sick and had to stay behind. Kat kept in touch though, texting her on what was going on. There was a point when the texts stopped though, for a period of time. This, apparently, was the point when Mitch got Kat up to his bedroom. They were fooling around, kissing, touching. Mitch was positive he’d get what he had been searching for, from the sounds Kat was making as he massaged her from over her jeans. But, the moment Mitch moved to undress, Kat changed, sat up quickly and started buttoning up her shirt again. Mitch tried stopping her, but Kat’s conscious had kicked in. She wasn’t ready to do this, and she thought Mitch would understand. But when she told him, all he told her was that if she really loved him, and be with him, she’ll do this. That had sent Kat over the edge, there was yelling involved and she hit him before storming out. She had felt so dirty then. Kat had text Mel that was she coming home. And that’s what ended that; Kat was hurt, but furious at the same time.

Mitch mocked a pout. “Aww, Katie, don’t be like that.”

“It’s Kat,” Katherine growled. She knew no Katies. Her parents only ever called her Katie when she was little. But as she got older, they stopped. Now, it was Kat, or Kate, Katherine if they really wanted her attention. Mitch had called her Katie a lot. But since she broke up with him, she hated that name now, so much, brought back that hurt she felt before. Though, the anger usually hid that pretty well. Her father still calls her Katie every once in a while. But now, Kat just gave him glares. “Get lost, I have work to do.” She tried to slip past him, but Mitch grabbed her arm.

“What’s the rush, Baby? It’s a two hour class.”

That was it. Katherine had enough. She threw a punch. Melanie gasped; she had seen that coming. Mitch looked shocked, holding his cheek. Melanie had glanced back at the teacher, who didn’t seem to be paying any attention. Katherine slipped away without another word, leaving Mitch in shock. Though, she did feel a bit better now. Kat got her enlargement key, her photo paper and headed to the elevator to go down to the dark room. Melanie just followed her.

In the dark room, it was pretty quiet between Melanie and Katherine. Kat was still seething about Mitch and Mel knew no to bug her when she was like this. Nothing she said usually helped anyway, and space was what she needed, so she gave it to her. Katherine would come around, she always does.

Kat, however, was tired of the silence, and her ipod just wouldn’t cut it this time around. She pulled one of the earpieces out ear before she moved her picture from the stop bath to the fix, pressing it down under the surface with the tongs and started agitating and glanced over at Mel. “So, that story, let’s hear it.”

Mel blinked, so much for space. Kat’s seething usually last longer than that. But Mel figured, since she hit him, maybe it wouldn’t be as long. “What?”

“That ghost story thing. About the dark room,” Kat replied, waiting. She didn’t want to hear it, but if it broke the silence, fine. She’ll listen. Maybe it isn’t so bad.

“I told you already,” Mel said carefully, looking Kat over. What made her change her mind? She didn’t want to hear it before.

“Yeah, the Reader’s Digest version,” Kat replied, agitating still. Every now and then she glanced up at the clock that was on the wall. Her picture was only allowed in the fix for three minutes. Time was precious when it came to photography. “I want to hear the whole story. Come on, Mel. This silence is killing me.”

Mel took a breath, moving her own picture to the fix with Kat’s. “Alright,” she said simply and paused to think. It would have been easier to read it straight from the book, but she didn’t have the book now, so she’ll have to try to get things straight. “So, this guy, Josh. He’s always liked photography, but he didn’t have a lot of money for equipment, so for a while he just admired from afar. He dropped out of high school to get a job because his mother was sick and his father wasn’t earning enough.”

Kat stared at Mel for a while, why did this matter? Who cares about Josh’s parents, and his sick mother? But that was just her; she wasn’t much of a reader because the stories she tries to read start out so slow. Same with movies she watches, she likes action and quick moving plots. Kat glanced up at the clock and moved her picture to the final tub and let it sit there for the time being to wait for Mel. “Just get to it. What does this have to do with a dark room? So he’s poor..”

“Kat, please. I’m getting to it. Don’t interrupt,” Mel said, She loved Kat, just didn’t like when she interrupts. “So, Josh gathers enough money, it was too late for her mother, who passed a few months before. But he bought a camera and rented out an old dark room. No one had used it in a long time, and people who have came out crazy and instituted, or never seen again. But no one told Josh this,” Mel paused, moving her picture to the final tub before grabbed a tray and moved her picture to that and headed out to take a look, make sure it looked alright. Kat had followed with her own picture.
