IN CHECK
She moves one of her knights and takes his second bishop.
“I enjoy this,” he says.
“What,” she asks, sparing a glance and flashing a smile, “losing to me?”
He moves. “Yes.”
She moves. “Strange. I thought you were all about Pureblood superiority.”
He moves. “Hard to endorse it when you’re losing at chess.”
She moves, smiling again, and says nothing.
He moves. “Besides, I am deluding myself with the notion that it will teach me humility.”
She moves. “Check. And does it?”
He peers at the pieces, scowls at them, grits his teeth, and then slides his king out of the way. “I’ll have to think about it.”
She smiles again, blithely, and moves her queen. “Maybe,” she says, “you’re a masochist.”
One of his eyebrows flicks upward, and he looks at her for a moment. “That,” he says, “or I like you.”
She considers, and her smile widens a little. She toys with the tiny cross on her king’s crown. “I think you’re a masochist,” she decides. She glances at the board. “Checkmate.”
He looks morosely at the pieces where they stand at the end of their waltz. “You’re right,” he sighs. “I’m a masochist.”
