SHATTER
Roxas murmurs a protest as Axel buries a hand in his silky hair and pushes him against the wall-but gently. He knows what he’s got beneath his hands. He knows how easy it is to shatter nothing-Nobody.
“Just-wait-” Roxas whispers, delicate hands fluttering at Axel’s temples, at his ears, the startling blue eyes searching his face for something he knows they won’t find.
It’s old instincts-old dreams. They’re what make Roxas try, and they’re what let Axel know better.
Axel slides his mouth up Roxas’s jaw.
“You feel that?” he asks.
“…yes…”
Axel pushes the edge of Roxas’s hood aside, kissing the juncture of his neck and his shoulder. “That?”
“I-yes-”
Axel draws the zipper of Roxas’s robe just two inches down and applies his teeth gently to the boy’s collarbone. “That?”
Roxas nods, and Axel slides his hands down the breastbone, over the ribs… and Roxas nods again, eyelids sliding shut.
“Take that,” Axel tells him, the heel of his hand pressing into the bone of Roxas’s hip, “and pretend it’s here.” He presses a finger to the center of the narrow chest where a heart would be. Should be. Could have been, if things were different.
But they’re not.
Roxas curls his fingers in the front of Axel’s robe. “Does it work?” he asks. “Pretending?”
Axel smiles and meets his eyes. “Almost,” he replies.
