Ideally, I'd like to become a successful novelist. I love the idea of stringing words together and crafting a story that has not yet been told. I'd also be interested in working on screenplays, but it is not my ultimate goal. I don't know if I will even achieve it in the first place, due in part to the vast amount of money it takes to get started

There are opportunities if you look hard enough. I get a newsletter from the bbc that lets me know of schemes and competitions to help new writers get their big break.
Nothing is impossible.

This is, say, the 30th lj I've come across that answered "writer"/"novelist"/"author" to the Dream Job Writer's Block question. This is probably the tenth lj I've found that includes FANFIC, a genre I despise.
If you want to be a writer, you have to create something original. No matter how far you stretch it, FANFIC is still working with another's foundation. Literary theft.
