i can't help thinking that if you saw him less you'd like him more...he does sound a bit smothery-y.
but you're right, tell him now. Just be honest - travelling to bristol every other week so expensive and tiring and you have other things to do with your time. maybe you could suggest just cooling it off then maybe going to see him in a couple of months and see how it feels then? i might drive to see my friend and we could road trip!
don't let this put you off the party because that will still be great!
