The processing time thing is totally fascinating to me.

I've encountered it in a slightly different context: young horses have it, too, only few people talk about it. When you ask a young horse to do something, you ask, and then you just sit quietly and wait for them to work it out, and usually you get at least an adequate effort to comply.

Only you need to sit still and wait for what feels like an eternity. Most people want to fill that gap with more commands, but that just ends up confusing youngsters - suddenly they have not just one thing to think about, but three, four, five, and quite often people escalate their aids when the first one didn't get a result, so the horse will shut down or get nervous or have the equine equivalent of a tantrum.

I had no idea it was a mammal thing, but that makes perfect sense!

Dogs, too! It is so tempting to repeat yourself. "Sit. Sit. Sit! Come on, sit! Sit down, you pesky dog!" and then you have completely ruined your cue, oh boy.
